Product Description:

Recently rated 5 mice by MacUser UK and 4.5 mice by Macworld, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to your Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also adds the ability to see zoomable previews in Open dialogs and to save Spotlight comments and set Finder labels for documents in the Save As dialog, while you're saving them.

What's new in this version:

This is a public beta version meant for testing by people who have encountered problems or want an early look at new features. Changes in this build include:

  • Fixed a problem with Default Folder X's hotkeys and system menu not working when Mail.app was set as a login item.
  • Fixed a bug in which dragging a file onto Mail.app in the Dock would create two messages instead of one.
  • The info panel now correctly shows the size of application packages and other packaged files.
  • The preview server now releases images after sending them to Default Folder X. On some machines, its failure to do so would eventually cause previews to fail.
  • If the preview server fails (usually because a file's data is corrupt), it now just prints a message to the Console and shows the icon for the file rather than crashing.
  • Default Folder X was mistakenly moving the keyboard focus away from the filename field in Save As dialogs when the dialogs were in column view.
  • Updated French and German localizations.

The last fully tested and release version of Default Folder X is version 4.0, which you can download from http://www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX/index.html.

So Default Folder works great. I'm a registered user and recommend it. That being said, the downside is that they frequently want you to update their product, and this is the type of thing you want to stay on top of. Updates are complicated and cumbersome. You click "yes I want to download," then go to their web page and have to hunt for the small download link on their odd web page, then download the installer, then run the installer, click OK, then you have to log out and in to have it take effect. This happens frequently enough. They could make it easier and I have asked and they acknowledge this is something they could improve but they cannot be bothered to do it yet. Because of this thing, I give it 3 stars, as it is a frequent and significant annoyance they could fix but don't.
