Product Description:

Recently rated 5 mice by MacUser UK and 4.5 mice by Macworld, Default Folder X attaches a toolbar to your Open and Save dialogs in any OS X-native application. The toolbar gives you fast access to various folders and commands. You just click on the buttons to go to your favorite and recently used folders, manage the folders and files shown in the list, and make changes to your settings.

Default Folder also adds the ability to see zoomable previews in Open dialogs and to save Spotlight comments and OpenMeta tags for documents in the Save As dialog, while you're saving them.

What's new in this version:

  • OpenMeta tags are now supported in the Spotlight window below Save As dialogs and in the Info window below Open dialogs. After tagging a file with "MyTag", you can use Spotlight to search for it by typing "tag: MyTag".
  • A new AppleScript command, ClearRecentFolders, clears the list of recently used folders in the currently active folder set.
  • This release is compatible with the latest development build of Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
  • If you use "Hold down the option key while choosing Open to display all files" in the Advanced settings, you will also be shown all invisible folders if you hold down the option key while selecting Save As.
  • Added a hidden option to display files as well as folders in all hierarchical menus. Option click on "Settings" to find the checkbox.
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in Spotlight comments not being saved when doing a Save As and overwriting an existing file (this affected Acrobat Pro 9 as well as other applications).
  • Worked around a bug in the Mac OS 10.4 Finder which would cause Default Folder X's Finder window list to show no windows if the Finder is hidden.
  • Corrected a bug that caused Default Folder X to print warning messages in the console like " ** No alias data for item 0 (folder name) **" when there was a Smart Folder open in the Finder.
  • Fixed problems with the rebound feature in Cocoa apps and very old Carbon apps.
  • Added a workaround so Default Folder X appears in MacTheRipper.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC

Default Folder X ReviewIndispensable tool for navigating Open/Save dialog - Version: 4.1.1, 3/22/2009 07:24AM PST

Default Folder X is an indispensable tool for navigating through your hard disk in Open/Save dialogs. It makes it easy to find and manage files and folders without resorting to the Finder to dig these out.

I have used Default Folder in its various incarnations now for years, and it would be difficult to work without it. So much so that I've always wondered why Apple never picked this up and merged this into the Mac OS.

Default Folder is a very handy navigation tool with a clean and uncluttered user interface. It conveniently helps you keep track of recently used folders, lets you jump quickly to application default folders or to your own favorites, and helps you manage file and folder information including preview information on images.

The price may seem steep for something that only really ever gets used in Open/Save dialogs, but this incredible time-and-effort saver is well worth it.

I can't sing enough praises about this GREAT tool - and I'm a classical singer by profession! - and have been kicking myself for not having discovered Default Folder X till the Version Tracker e-mail newsletter of some two weeks ago. Heartfelt thanks to the developer for such a time- and life-saver.
