Olympus DSS Player ReviewPodcasting feature is not available in Mac version - Version: 7.0.1, 12/2/2008 06:02AM PST

Apparently the Podcasting feature described in the manual is not applicable to mac installations of the DSS player plus software. It is a PC only feature. So you cannot subscribe to podcasts and have DSS Player Plus automatically download them.

This software has always been crap and this just adds insult to injury. I have no complaints with the DS-40 digital voice recorder but the accompaning software sux and then Olympus has the nerve to charge you $10 to upgrade to Plus. Are you kidding me? Charge me $10 to upgrade to features that aren't even available to me? Rubbish.

Olympus DSS Player CommentaryBeware Upgrading to 7.0.1 - Version: 7.0.1, 9/22/2008 03:09PM PST

I have been happily using DSS Player with my RS26 foot pedal, but since upgrading to version 7.0.1 it no longer works. This is very odd because this footpedal is still available! What is the point of this software upgrade, if not to improve the Hardware sales for Olympus :(

Olympus DSS Player CommentaryCaution, 7.x only supports newer Olympus devices - Version: 7.0.1, 9/4/2008 10:33AM PST

A caution before updating: be aware that the 7.x software does NOT support several older but still commonly used Olympus recorders/devices. From the 7.0.1 ReadMe file:

"Note : DSS Player for MAC V7 does not support the following discontinued recorders DS-3000/2000/660/330/320/150/10, DM-1 and the RS-25 foot pedal. While direct recording is supported, Direct Recording in DSS LP mode and WMA fomat are not."

On a test machine, I tried installing the software anyway just to see what would happen, and the 7.x software DID NOT work with either my DS-2200 or DS-2000 recorders, nor did it work with the RS-25 pedal--just like the ReadMe indicated. Very sad as these devices are not that old.

Olympus DSS Player CommentaryDoesn't work - Version: 6.2.1, 5/24/2008 12:54PM PST

Intel mac, os 10.5.2. This miserable piece of software does not even see the rather lovely DS-30 digital voice recorder. Fortunately the computer does, and mounts it as a disc. Even better the .WMA files are seamlessly played by quicktime. It's still very annoying that the DSS player doesn't work as the files could be converted directly to AIFF on download if it did.

Olympus DSS Player Troubleshooting ReportDSS Software DS-2300 and Panther - Version: 6.2.0, 3/25/2008 06:32AM PST

We have just started using this software and it installed without a problem on a number of machines. I would agree with other comments that the GUI is not what we’re used to with bespoke mac products. However, when using it with the foot pedal (on payback) it is crashing (a lot – say, 6 times over two hours use), which is annoying. If anyone has the same issue or knows of a fix I’d be grateful. Thanks in anticipation.

Olympus DSS Player Troubleshooting ReportWorks well until it doesn't - which is often - Version: 6.2.0, 12/28/2007 10:38PM PST

My Olympus digital recorder has been a main tool of my career as a journalist for some time now, but the DSS Player hasn't helped matters much. When I had OS 9 it worked just fine, but ever since I made the upgrade to OS X a couple of years ago, the software consistently craps out on me when I use it. The problem happens when I hit the stop button. Sometimes I can use it for several minutes normally, sometimes even for well more than a hour. But at some point, I will hit the stop button with my pointer and the playback will continue for several seconds, the spinning wheel will spin, and then the entire application will quit. Olympus has been no help; their online support is a joke and the one time I called customer service, the person all but treated me as if I didn't know what I was talking about. Upgrades of the DSS software haven't fixed the problem. The only reason I haven't abandoned the whole thing is that there are few audio recorders compatible with Macs. Still, I wish Olympus would acknowledge the problem and issue some sort of solution.

Olympus DSS Player ReviewUtter rubbish. - Version: 6.2.0, 10/7/2007 05:00AM PST

Why this awful bit of software gets a 3 stars I don't know. My Olympus dictaphone otoh, is really very good (DM-20)- but this DSS Player software?? I've just upgraded from version 1.x.x and apart from not having files in the shared folder and in documents instead, this update is utter rubbish and personally, Olympus should be ashamed of themselves. For a start the DSS Player application is really not very OSX at all- it even looks like it's been ported from 9 then left to 'rot'. Not even the scroll function, built into almost every other application seems to work- and the fonts all look like a hangover from OS9.x. I don't know what the Windows version of this software is like- probably a lot better than the Mac version? No prizes there then? Not good IMO. AND there is still no option for mp3 or AAC conversion in the software (okay fair play- all those who use the excellent iListen, need AIF files, but at least iListen is developed by people who care about the Apple Mac platform, unlike Olympus). Sorry for the rant, but I'm still having to drop all my files into iTunes just to convert them to mp3/4's and it's driving me nuts, and I've been doing this all morning. I'd rather be outside playing with my children :( :( :(

Olympus DSS Player Commentary6.0.4 not there anymore - Version: 6.0.4, 6/13/2007 01:52AM PST

Though this page is for v. 6.0.4, when you click the download link, the Olympus page does not contain a link to download DSS Player v.6.0.4, it has evidently been removed. There is of course the newer v.6.2.0, but through lousy wording, I can't tell if it is a universal binary that will work on my PPC based Mac, or only on Intel Macs. The blurb below the download link reads:

"This is a software update module for the DSS Player for MAC V6. This update will enable the DSS Player for MAC V6 (PowerPC Binary) to run on Intel-based MAC and support the Mass Storage Class recorders from Olympus. This update is applicable to MAC (OS X) V6 versions. Check the readme file for additional information. (Self-extracting .dmg disk image file 3.22 MB) (1/2007) (MAC OS X only)." What is meant by "PowerPC Binary"? Univeral or not? Clicking on the Read Me link below the download (should open a PDF file) is 404 - file not found.

I'm leery about installing 6.2.0, since 6.0.4 works fine for me, and I'm concerned about the trend of newer software versions removing some previously included functionality. That BTW is the case with iListen, which in version 1.6.8 had support for the Olympus recorders but upon introducing v. 1.7, MacSpeech removed that functionality, for which users of recorders are now forced to pay a steep $75 for a "TranscriptionPak" otherwise the Olympus recorders won't work with iListen.

Thus, in addition to DSS Player to manage files, to listen to and type speech I've recorded, there is an app called Express Scribe that reads files from the recorder, can do faster, slower, back up, fast forward, etc., and works with a USB dictation petal or keyboard modifier-arrow keys combos. Since DS-2 or DS-20 have problems in this area (multiple files if one backs up to review), such software is invaluable.

Olympus DSS Player Usage TipHaving trouble getting started - Version: 6.0.4, 12/30/2006 07:20PM PST

imaginationworks
I downloaded from the CD the DSS Player for Mac1.3.3(E) 1997-2003. I'm using Mac OS X version 10.3.9 .

Like others, I got the comment "Failed to allocate memory for the voice file."

I downloaded the most recent Audacity I could = 1.2.6

I downloaded the DSS Player 6.0.4 1997-2005. Still got the comment "Failed to allocate memory for the voice file" when I tried to open this file (I've retained the other DSS Player for Mac 1.3.3.)

Could some kind person assist? What should I do?

Thanks,

Adrian
