Product Description:

Faster at any sensitivity, more sensitive at any speed, WU-BLAST is the original BLAST with gapped alignments and statistics, supporting virtually unlimited size sequences, unlimited size databases and more important features for the power user than ever before. Gapped alignments and Sum statistics in all search modes (BLASTP, BLASTN, BLASTX, TBLASTN, TBLASTX), segmented sequences, and much more.

Supports any PowerPC G-series processor, as well as Intel i386, and threads searches across multiple processors on dual G4 and G5 systems.

Free license for academic and nonprofit use.

What's new in this version:

More effective use of memory and processors by the 64-bit binaries running on multi-processor (or multi-core) G5 systems configured with more than 2-3 GB memory.

The "span" and "span1" options had no effect, if the "stats" option was also specified on the command line.

When the "nogaps" option was specified, nonsensical values for X, E2 and S2 were mistakenly reported in the Parameters section for the irrelevant case of gapped alignments.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.1 or higher (Tiger Compatible); Darwin 1.4.1 or higher on PowerPC

WU BLAST 2.0 ReviewRe-installed; works well - Version: 2006-01-01, 11/15/2006 05:18AM PST

In my previous comment I said I couldn't even get it to start. Please ignore that comment, because on a new machine with a fresh install I have no problems. Although I think I did everything the same, I suspect my previous machine had either permissions, or its PATH, screwed up.

WU-Blast works very well, is immensely configurable, and is fast and accurate. It's not aimed at beginners, either with computers or with genetics in general. Although it's MacOSX native it's a UNIX program, purely command-line. The documentation is extensive but technical -- you're expected to have a general grasp of the concepts before you start.

I'm giving it four stars overall, because five stars implies that it couldn't be improved. I think documentation could be made more accessible, and installation and running could in principle be simplified. However, for the audience this is aimed at these are not really flaws. Technically WU BLAST does exactly what it should do, and does so very well.

WU BLAST 2.0 ReviewCan't even start it - Version: 2005-05-10c, 8/12/2005 07:10AM PST

The README file includes a lot of advanced help, but in my case I can't even get it running ... the cryptic instructions for using the command line simply don't work, even copying and pasting the 'examples'. Command line doesn't recognize that the program exists -- double-clicking on the executables yields only an error message ("FATAL: Invalid program name: ..."), because apparently they are supposed to be run from command line, which does nothing. Followed installation instructions carefully. I've been trying to use this software for a couple of years with no success. I've used NCBI blast for nearly 20 years, have a fair bit of experience with command line tools and scripts, but am completely baffled by this software. Very frustrating. I won't give rating to the functionality of the program, since I haven't been able to test it.
