Lotus Notes ReviewNot bad, but... - Version: 8.5b, 7/14/2008 01:41AM PST

Mac-Fan No 1 (Berchtold IT-Service)
Use the 8.5 since the first beta (this is called beta 1 but is in fact the second; perhaps the mean the first public beta) on my MacPro 4x2,8 GHz with 4 GB RAM. The standard version (eclipse version) is soooo sloooowwwww, you nearly can't work with it. So I installed the basic version. That works very fine and is pretty fast.
For the developers: There ist one bug that already was in the first beta: The "Mark selected" menu ativates only at the second click!
Stability: Under normal work circumstances Notes runs pretty stable (as a beta). But sometimes, when copying attatched documents from one database to another, it hangs in a way that even with kill -9 PID command as root user I can't quit Notes. The system then ist not able to reboot in any way an I have to shutdown the machine by pressing the power switch.
Looking forward for the next version that hopefully brings speed into the eclipse version.
Five stars because beta status software normaly have some bugs and because of getting betas from IBM at all:-)

The new 8.5 M1 beta release greatly improves the performance, makes the full version very usable on modern systems.

Lotus Notes ReviewBest Notes client ever, but... - Version: 8.5b, 3/31/2008 12:55AM PST

only install the basic version (190 MB). It runs very stable and fast. The new mail template works great with server versions 6.5.x, 7.0.x and 8.0.1 and looks very pretty. Client ist much faster than 7.0.3, perhaps because of universal binary version.
But beware: First I installed the full eclipse version (730 MB). It took nearly 2 minutes to start the application (MacPro 4 x 2,66 GHz, 4 GB!!!), ran very instable and asked about four times for the password (for every java task it starts) which then couldn't be saved. If you try to move a mail document to a folder you have to be very very very patient.
To IBM: Some info like "What's new" or a screenshot would be fine.
Resumé: The basic client is the best Notes client ever, the full eclipse version needs a revision from the ground off.
