DockFun! ReviewOut of Date - Version: 4.7, 4/21/2008 11:13AM PST

I've used DockFun for quite some time (and have it licensed for 10 cpu's). There have been few updates. No support email address. Occasionally DockFun starts consuming extra CPU, you have to quit and relaunch. No updates for Leopard, no updates since 2006. If you are a Tiger user and don't mind it sucking 30% CPU cycles when it burps its fine but the lack of support and updates have me looking for a replacement. Unfortunately I can no longer recommend it.

DockFun! ReviewVery disappointing - Version: 4.7, 8/29/2007 02:04PM PST

While I like the idea of what DockFun! does, it extended the time from login to actually being able to use the computer by about 30 seconds. The splash screen is ugly and displays way too long. The UI is horribly designed, and it crashed several times. I would feel bad writing such a harsh review, if it wasn't for the nagging! I switched the dock twice, and up came a nag window! I very quickly removed this software. I needed something to help my workflow, but hinder it.

DockFun! ReviewNag Nag Nag - Version: 4.7, 11/30/2006 04:25PM PST

I can see great potential but if it does not give me a decent amount of time to see if I can use it in my workflow without interrupting me with "buy, buy, buy" reminders, I won't be be pulling out my credit card.

I found it easy to set up, but I have found a few quirks, but honestly can't say whether they were caused by the nag popups interfering with the workflow.

An example, I opened Aperture through DockFun, quit it, and then tried to open it again through Dockfun — no way! Neither the menu or dock option would work.

DockFun! ReviewGood when it works - Version: 4.6.6, 10/7/2005 07:11AM PST

I like the program... when it works. The nag screen as someone else mentioned is a bit over-aggressive, and almost nearly pissed me off to the point where I didn't want to buy the program out of spite. However, I did because it was something that I rapidly began to use in my typical workflow.

And then somehow, without explanation, docks began to disappear on me. I would type in the keyboard commands and nothing would happen. The dock would disappear and then reappear as the same dock that I was using. I, too, tried to use the online help only to find the dreaded 404 not found error.

After re-creating the docks by hand a few times, it got very, very old. I shot of an email to the author - twice - and never got a single response. It was only now that I found out (because the help was unavailable) about docks getting corrupted and exporting them as a backup.

Even the process of exporting is onerous. You have the option of exporting all the docks as a single file, which imports them back *in* as a single file, duplicating all the docks at once. There's no option to select which dock you want to import; it's either all or nothing. This means that you have to disable all the docks if you want to back up one dock, export it, disable *that* dock, enable another dock, export that, etc.

The program itself - when it works - is stellar. It's relatively fast, and has helped me organize apps according to my work flow. I reduced it by one star because of this whole backup/corruption problem, and another star because of the total lack of response and support by the author. YMMV.

DockFun! ReviewVery Easy to Use! Awesome Add On to OS X. - Version: 4.6.3, 4/27/2005 01:12PM PST

I didn't have any problems with this very simple add-on for the OS X. I use many applications ranging from design, web, ipod utilities, MS applications, etc. This add-on simply gives you a startup video tutorial explaining what it does and how to make it work. Next thing you know, I have 3 ways to access my applications. You can use the docfun menu, or use the docfun floating palette that lets you enable smaller docs that you customized in DocFun's DocPit Preferences, or simply switch to the doc you created and let it rest as the main doc that you'll be using according to your project. This is a definitely a must have for any professional or home use. My coworkers love it.

DockFun! ReviewGREAT idea. TERRIBLE UI. - Version: 4.6.3, 4/2/2005 02:08PM PST

The screen shots and even the annoying animation made it look as if it was exactly what I was looking for.

Downloaded it, went past the first (of many) registration nag messages (it's only my first time evaluating it people! Let us at least use it ONCE before apply the registration pressure, OK?).

OK - let's set up an experiment and make a new doc... Um - how do I add things to the new doc? Well, let's look it up in help. Oh - 404 error. Sigh... no I DON'T want to register the product yet, OK?

Try other stuff. Why did some of my original icons in the doc turn to question marks? That's really annoying... No I DON'T want to register the product yet, OK? Logging out and back in doesn't make them come back.

So - online support? Broken. In-product support? Not there. Intuitive UI to handle absolutely critical operations (you can't use alternate docs if you can't create them)? Not there.

But the "Register Now!" nagging features work PERFECTLY. You can tell where the developers put most of their energies.

DockFun! ReviewWorks perfectly - Version: 4.6.2, 12/12/2004 02:15PM PST

I have been a long time user of DockFun! I have 11 separate docks with as few as 8 and as many as 20 items in each of the docks. Ever since the Dockfun! 4 series it has been very stable, flexible, and easy to setup and use.

However, one tiny blemish which can't be helped - having a large number of items in the docks causes it to be a bit slow to update or change between docks.

Also, there is a nice little feature which allows you to export (backup) all the docks - just in case the docks become corrupt. It hasn't happened to me but I feel secure that I have a backup if needed.

Crashed a little ways into using it the first time, and left my real dock stripped of all the apps I had in it. Nothing catastrophic, but I guess I can't use it...867 MHz PB, OSX 10.3.6

DockFun! ReviewYes multiple docks! - Version: 4.6, 6/15/2004 09:21AM PST

Yes it is possible to run multiple docks.

You can run only one Apple Dock, but you can have as many Donelleschi Docks as you want.

The Donelleschi Docks are a copy of the Dock, however The Donelleschi Docks were designed to be simple and light in CPU usage.

I can't think my life without this tool.
