USB Overdrive ReviewToo many problems - Version: 3.0.1, 10/25/2009 03:20PM PST

rskinner
I gave USB Overdrive another try, despite difficulties in the past, because others speak so highly of it. This time it worked exactly as intended. However, I soon realized that my volume keys and eject key no longer worked. After uninstalling USB Overdrive, my keyboard resumed acting normally.

USB Overdrive ReviewGreat product - Version: 3.0.1, 10/6/2009 04:54AM PST

USB Overdrive has been the dominant 3rd party mouse driver for quite some time and been an absolute necessity for more demanding users due to OS X's scarce customizability and poor handling of 3rd party mice and keyboards.

While its previous versions have been limited to controlling and customizing the mouse, 3.0 can also control keyboards, effectively eliminating the need for other drivers such as Logitech Control Center, drivers which often has proven to be unstable, incompatible and incomplete.

Highly recommended.

USB Overdrive CommentaryHow much to upgrade...? - Version: 3.0.1, 9/29/2009 10:39PM PST

In the readme:

"REGISTERED USERS NOTE: You will be asked for your registration code again when upgrading from earlier versions. Your existing code still works and you can use it right away, but if you registered before September 2008 and you find the update useful there is a small upgrade fee to pay at the Senlick Kagi store."

I paid for this back in 2002, I'm not going to bother installing this if I have to pay more... I don't have a bank account right now nor any credit cards as I try to pay off my debts.

TIA

USB Overdrive ReviewGreat product! - Version: 3.0.1, 9/29/2009 04:56PM PST

I've used USB Overdrive since before OS X, and it's been a great way to fine-tune my mice. The 3.0 interface is new, but is still quite usable. Many people react to it negatively because they're afraid of change, but it has all the functionality as the previous version. I REALLY enjoy being able to turn off mouse acceleration.

I'm not quite sure why people have had negative experiences.

Perhaps those having 'problems' with old prefs not being usable should have read the release notes that clearly state that old prefs won't work with the new version due to an issue with SL.

Anyway, all my regular peripherals work fine for me. Not problems at all.

USB Overdrive CommentaryI worked a lot on version 3.0 and 3.0.1 - Version: 3.0.1, 9/29/2009 12:21PM PST

Hello everyone, Alessandro speaking here. I don't mean to interfere but I would like to point out that several of the issues listed here in the comments are described and solved in the Support and Step by Step sections of the USB Overdrive website. The Volume and Eject keys on Apple keyboards can be configured with the Overdrive or given back to the OS in a couple of simple steps. Users who complain that the new version of the Overdrive is not working may have run into the Snow Leopard cache problem, which has nothing to do with the Overdrive itself (yes, reinstalling 10.4.8 may work but then again reinstalling 3.0.1 would do the same). Posting negative feedback is the right thing to do if something doesn't work and a problem can't be solved, but if you're looking for solutions I'd love to help. There are hundreds of users who are really happy with 3.0. Speak up guys! Coming to VersionTracker and seeing several negative comments in the front page for no good reason really makes me sad.

USB Overdrive ReviewNo way - Version: 3.0, 9/20/2009 02:03PM PST

My faithful Logitech Cordless mouse became utterly and completely useless with this version. No button was any longer functional, not even the wheel. Even the speed was affected, as it slowed down to a crawl. No matter how much I'd fiddle with the settings, it didn't change a thing, so I uninstalled it and re-installed 10.4.8, which had served me well so far. Thankfully, the old version remembered all the settings and prefs, and the old mouse went on roaring all over again. Peccato, Alessandro.

USB Overdrive ReviewNot quite ready - Version: 3.0, 9/18/2009 06:39PM PST

I was incredibly disappointed with this update. The interface is cryptic compared to the older version. Navigating is a nightmare. The worst part about it is setting the mouse tracking and acceleration speeds. Not even close to the beauty and functionality of the original. The way the interface is set up, it appears as though these settings are missing but are now setting wheel speeds.

Not being able to read the old prefs was a huge downer. For those of us with a lot of app specific set-ups, this is a real show-stopper in terms of time spent to recall the older prefs....especially when it comes to mouse speed settings. There is nothing to make the translation from. Just mind numbing guess-work.

The joy of using it has been sucked out of the room.

I'll wait til Alessandro works through this. I've got faith. So, no ratings. Meantime: back to v1048.

USB Overdrive CommentaryUSB Overdrive kills the eject and sound keys. - Version: 3.0, 9/18/2009 12:26PM PST

I installed and suddenly the eject key no longer worked ... nor the sound keys (top row of keys above the key pad keys) ... so I had to uninstall to regain functionality.

I tried to contact the developer to no avail ... so I'm posting here to warn people of a possible problem..

Quad G5 , OS 10.5.8 ..
