Product Description:

TextLightning is a Mac OS X native utility for converting PDF files to RTF format. TextLightning reconstructs as much of the original formatting as possible, including fonts, paragraphs, justification, margins and international characters as well as ligatures.

PDF is the standard print and interchange format on Mac OS X, in addition to being a widely used cross-platform and standard for exchanging documents via e-mail and the web.

TextLightning makes all these documents accessible from your favorite Mac OS X text editing program as easily as opening the file. Any services-aware application, such as the Apple-supplied TextEdit or any other Cocoa app, gains the ability to open PDF documents as rich text once TextLightning is installed.

We bought this a few years ago but never use it. PDF2RTFService does the same thing for free and FileJuicer, for half the price, extracts graphics as well as text.

TextLightning ReviewUseless crapware, use Adobe Reader for accurate conversion - Version: 3.1, 4/5/2006 09:17AM PST

TextLightning works...sometimes. If you've got a PDF with simple formatting TextLightning will churn out a respectable rtf file. Feed TextLightning a slightly complex PDF file, and you get a useless rtf document filled with word fragments and line breaks every few words. But it still beats manually copying and pasting text from PDF files, right?

Oh, but imagine my surprise when I downloaded the latest version of Adobe Reader (v7.0.7), opened a complex PDF document on which TextLightning had choked, and saw a curious item in the File menu: "Save As Text..." In a few minutes I'd converted all of my most complex PDF files to txt files, and the results were PERFECT!

Adobe Reader does this for FREE, and it does it well.

Grow up, TheRealTerry. The demo didn't "screw up" anything, your original PDF is still intact. It gave you a perfectly reasonable demo of what the app can do. I used the demo to run several PDF documents, large and small, with and without complicated formatting. It clearly works like a charm, and I'll be sending in my money.
