I tried SoundOut but didn't like the fact that it uses an app rather than a menu item. I then tried SoundSource which is a real menu item. SoundSource's interface looks very professional and shows all of the options for input and output sound, even separating the output device selection for system and other sounds.
I have however uninstalled SoundSource and gone back to SoundOut. why? because it's so damn simple to use. I don't need input options and I don't need separate system and other output options. all I need is to be able to switch between my two connected output devices; my SoundSticks and my headphones. the fact that SoundOut always places the unchosen device first in the menu is pure genius! whenever I need to switch devices, the one I need is always first in the menu.
my only disappointment is that SoundOut lists my headphones as "Built-in Audio" in its menu rather than "Headphones" as shown in the Sound preferences panel. overall though, it's a great utility to have.
SoundOut is better

I tried SoundSource first but switched. SoundSource hangs my menu bar when I have it loaded in multiple users and have multiple users logged on. And the menu has too many options for non-techies.
Seems useful, though opening an app
to control audio settings doesn't feel THAT
much more efficient than doing it via pref .
