Product Description:

Eudora mailboxes do not adhere to the standard mbox format which makes importing into other applications somewhat of a pain - the default import function for Eudora mailboxes of most mail client thus exhibit some problems, namely:

  • Most HTML and rich-text messages are not imported properly (you see all formatting tags instead of the properly formatted message)
  • All messages are imported as "unread," i.e., the original message status flags are ignored
  • Attachments in the messages are lost
  • Sent messages might lose their original date and show the date of import instead
  • There is no straightforward way for importing Eudora's nicknames into the MacOS X Address Book
  • There is no option for importing Eudora's filters

'Eudora Mailbox Cleaner' solves these problems by providing an alternate, direct import of mailboxes from Eudora into Mail or Thunderbird. Furthermore, it migrates Eudora's filters into Mail rules and directly imports Eudora nickname files into the Mac OS X Address Book or the current Thunderbird profile.

What's new in this version:

New features:

  • Support for Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" - upgraded the application for the new filter and mailbox formats introduced in Mail 2.0. The output format when migrating to Mail depends on the current system version - everything still works fine on systems starting with 10.2.
Since Tiger's Mail uses a SQlite database in addition to the mailboxes, you will have to manually rebuild the imported mailboxes in Mail. See "Program Usage" for more information.

Improvements/bugfixes:

  • Fix recovering of embedded images when converting mailboxes from Windows Eudora.
  • Correctly identify additional mime-types for attachments and embedded files. We now also take into account the file extension for mime-type determination. This helps for images to be correctly displayed in Thunderbird.
  • Make sure not to ignore all but the first embedded file per line if more than one file is referenced on a single line.
  • Properly detect groups which consist of nicknames only (i.e., no email addresses).
  • When importing nicknames into the MacOS Address Book, add the contact to the database before adding it to the group. Even though both ways work, adding the person to a group first will produce a warning in the console.log.
  • When importing nicknames into the Mac OS X Address Book, do not import Eudora's read-only version of the Address Book since we would end up with lots of duplicates.
  • Make sure that we create properly encoded UTF-8 data when writing to Mail's rules plist file. This should fix the problem with Eudora's rules not importing properly.

Changing email clients is rare and a usually a one-off exercise. It also a real pain.
Converted 13 years of Eudora mail across 10 mailboxes with attachments and read/reply marks.
The attachments didn't come through first time so deleted the imported Apple Mail folder & started again - 2nd time worked perfectly/

Eudora Mailbox Cleaner Usage TipBetter organization of the directions will improve the product - Version: 4.9, 4/7/2009 11:33PM PST

I read the directions more than once. If they could be organized better, they might be easier to understand. Since this is a "get it right the first time" process, a clearer layout of the steps will help a user to feel more confident before committing himself.

Eudora Mailbox Cleaner ReviewPC Eudora 7 to OS X Mail -- flawless migration - Version: 4.9, 4/7/2009 11:22PM PST

With a little careful reading of the instructions, and even as a newbie Mac user, EMC imported some 7 years' (230 mailboxes) of mail from PC Eudora to OS X Apple Mail. The two scripts included in the package automated rebuilding of the imported mailboxes and edited and activated imported filters.

This program is the only one I've seen that does the whole job with very little effort on your part. And I've looked.

Congratulations to Aamann on a superb program. I'll send him a donation.
