FontDoctor CommentaryThis Thing Is So Useless - Version: 7.3.1, 7/31/2007 04:09AM PST

I've fired up Font Doctor several times over the last two years in attempts to fix various problem fonts. Each and every time Font Doctor gives the problem font a clean bill of health. Meanwhile Suitcase is reporting it damaged.

I've never dared run it on my entire collection after trying it on a subfolder and reading some of the comments here. I've come the conclusion that Font Doctor is useless.

FontDoctor ReviewI thought this would *fix* problems... - Version: 7.3.1, 5/27/2007 01:51AM PST

I checked my fonts with FontBook and I found that many of them, though they worked, had validation issues. So I thought I'd search for a program to try and repair them and I dowloaded this.

The program ran fine: it checked fonts, found problems and fixed them. It found problems in fonts that FontBook hadn't apparently noticed, but on the other side it didn't find any problems in the ones FontBook had pointed as bad.

After everything was done, I opened FontBook and found out that my fonts had suddenly decreased........ Now half of my user fonts (60+) DON'T work anymore though they appear as "installed". They don't even show up in FontBook!!!

I guess now I'll have to check which fonts have been modified by FontDoctor and replace them with the ones from a recent backup (which I luckily have...)..

Mind, I'm *not* saying this program is rubbish. It does have some positive reviews, so I guess it's just a matter of luck and/or what kind of fonts you have installed. Just to be sure, I'd suggest you to do a backup of your fonts, so that you can revert to it in case the program screws something up. :(

This program has helped resolve all sorts of font problems for us. It does exactly what it says and does it extremely well. I've heard it crashes on a user's machine, but it has neve, never, ever on mine.

Love this application!

Worth 5 times the price at least!

I have been using Font Doctor for about three years now and I have never had any problems. I work for a trade printer and I use it to check fonts supplied to me by customers. It does exactly what I expect it to do with no problems, never crashed once.

FontDoctor CommentaryMore Caveats to the Unwary - Version: 7.2.0, 10/23/2006 09:13PM PST

My review below tells only part of the story with the incomprehensible crashes while trashing files (up to about ten or twelve crashes now), but the application is rife with shoddy behavior. Every time I re-run it on the same folder of fonts, it finds exactly the same problem fonts that it supposedly MOVED the last time it ran. So it can't possibly be moving them. That would be bad enough, but it somehow manages to find even more problem fonts each time it's run that it had NOT found before. Which means: A) It's incompetent at identifying problem fonts (and moving them), or, B) It's creating problems with the fonts it inspects every time it's run. Which would you prefer? Furthermore, it has requestors that pop up for some functions that omit any "apply to all" option, requiring repititious interaction by the user. It also, while in the grips and spasms of its (apparently) RealBasic routines, utterly refuses to honor any "Hide" commands, even from the Finder attempting to "Hide Others." And after having gone through all the crashes while trashing duplicate files, restarting the entire long process until it got through that portion of its functions without crashing, it appears it arose from some limitation in the program itself of the number of trashed file. I can't prove that, but every time I would empty the trash after a crash, it seemed to be approximately the same number of files in the trash. And this program is up to version 7.2.0. You want to trust your fonts to this? You make the call. Sure hope you have backups.

FontDoctor ReviewStill Crashy After All These Years... - Version: 7.2.0, 10/22/2006 09:00AM PST

Six crashes over the course of two days in yet another attempt to have FontDoctor X demonstrate even a modicum of understanding of fonts and competence at dealing with them. The program crashes when (S-L-O-W-L-Y) sending files to the Trash. That bears repeating: after being in the Mac market for lo, these many years, the programmers still have not figured out how to send unwanted files to the Trash competently without their program suddenly quitting. You read it here. Tell your friends. But first, stay and attend: FontDoctor X *STILL* analyzes for empty suitcases FIRST, and only *LATER* asks if it should move around screen fonts that need to be joined to printer fonts. And what do you think that leaves all over the place? Did you say "empty suitcases"? If so, would you please go apply for a job at Morrison? This isn't a programming decision; this is a decision on the level of, "Should I put my trousers on first, or my underpants?" I beg someone to go do some pro bono competent career counseling for these people. Meanwhile, there still is not a single decent program anywhere in the entire Mac universe that competently, effectively, and efficiently can repair and provide for user-controlled administration of a large and varied font collection. Period.

FontDoctor CommentaryNot Intel compatible. Also, want support? Stay away. - Version: 7.2.0, 8/23/2006 05:30AM PST

It looks like this product doesn't support Intel Macs, so beware.
When I wrote them to confirm this (three times over two months!!) they never bothered to write back. You'd think they'd be interested, at least on the sales side. Between this and other comments, forget it!
