Actually Path Finder from CocoaTech has had the tabbed browsing, thumbnail previews, etc. for quite a while now. If you are looking for a better Finder than the Finder, this is the way to go IMHO. Plus it has a great little Text editor, Preview alternative, PDF reader, Terminal and HTML editor built in.

Invisible Files and Demo Format - Version: 4.3, 4/5/2005 08:34PM PST

If you have already changed the default Finder behavior to display all invisible files (as with the CLI command of "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE"), then Macintosh Explorer will freak out if you try to expand an invisible folder and then collapse it back.
Also, I prefer a demo period defined by elapsed time rather than by launches. Or if a given launch is less than a certain period of time -- say ten minutes -- then that could not count against the launches a user is allowed for a demo period. (And to guard against abuse of this, the product could simply fail to run after two weeks or one month.)

When I actually started to use it regularly, I found it to be a really poor substitute for the finder. In fact it is a really poor product in general. It is really slow, buggy and awkward. It is missing many of the general features you that you get for free in the finder. It crashes often, and is slow to refresh. It is also missing keyboard shortcuts. Just using the finder is much more efficient and productive.
In general the idea is sound, but this is very poorly designed and executed.
Huge thumbs down.
