Macintosh Explorer X ReviewNot worth it.. - Version: 4.5, 5/4/2007 07:08PM PST

Unfortunately, I purchased this product too quickly. I found it at MacZot, played with it for a few minutes and quickly fell in love with the concept.

When I actually started to use it regularly, I found it to be a really poor substitute for the finder. In fact it is a really poor product in general. It is really slow, buggy and awkward. It is missing many of the general features you that you get for free in the finder. It crashes often, and is slow to refresh. It is also missing keyboard shortcuts. Just using the finder is much more efficient and productive.

In general the idea is sound, but this is very poorly designed and executed.

Huge thumbs down.

Macintosh Explorer X CommentaryTry Path Finder first - Version: 4.5, 2/14/2007 08:54AM PST

Actually Path Finder from CocoaTech has had the tabbed browsing, thumbnail previews, etc. for quite a while now. If you are looking for a better Finder than the Finder, this is the way to go IMHO. Plus it has a great little Text editor, Preview alternative, PDF reader, Terminal and HTML editor built in.

Macintosh Explorer X CommentaryInvisible Files and Demo Format - Version: 4.3, 4/5/2005 08:34PM PST

If you have already changed the default Finder behavior to display all invisible files (as with the CLI command of "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE"), then Macintosh Explorer will freak out if you try to expand an invisible folder and then collapse it back.

Also, I prefer a demo period defined by elapsed time rather than by launches. Or if a given launch is less than a certain period of time -- say ten minutes -- then that could not count against the launches a user is allowed for a demo period. (And to guard against abuse of this, the product could simply fail to run after two weeks or one month.)

Nevermind the features, the windows vs. Mac, etc... Please work on improving the speed or just stop wasting your time. This is not a meditation tool, and it's not an app to create artwork, where we can put up with the slow processing as long as the end result looks good. In this kind of apps, speed is the end result, and anything that's slower than the Finder is not going to replace it, no matter how intuitive it is, and no matter how many features you come up with.

For the same reason, I replaced Acrobat Reader with Preview to read pdf files, even though it doesn't offer 10 % of the features.

DiskOrder is a good example of Finder alternative that is inspired from a Windows Explorer alternative, and it's actually faster than the Finder. I'll stick to that, even though I prefer more the Macintosh Explorer's concept.

I'll check future versions, and I hope the developper won't simply get defensive and try to convince me that speed is not an issue in this case.

Macintosh Explorer X ReviewUseful - Version: 4.2.1, 12/21/2004 01:50PM PST

Any attempt to come up with something better than the finder should be welcomed, most have to agree the finder isn't that great, and lacking many features even Windows-Explorer offers, like keyboard controlled copy, paste & cut. I like the ideas behind this app. But it's just not very well implemented. Especially the graphics. Aligning of text and icons is just awful. And you can't set a different icon-size for just icon-view. The app has many bugs, like walking (scrolling) up long lists using the keyboard: goes way slower than walking down. And it does not respond to page up/down and home/end keys. Just to name a few...
3 stars for the attempt! And oh ja: please loose the carbon thing, go cocoa!

Macintosh Explorer X CommentaryMacintosh Explorer 4.2, & Mac OS 10.3.6 - Version: 4.2, 11/28/2004 08:13AM PST

I have been using ME for 3 days and many of its functions simply don't work with my version of Mac OS. After reading feedback it seems this product either works well or barely at all. Curious. My copy looks the business but fails to delivery in key areas such as finding files. The filter tool doesn't work well either and its settings tend to be lost after closing and relaunching the application. I have yet to investigate its many other features but I suspect some of them don't work either. Like many who have given feedback before me, I would agree that it's a 'nice try' and Windows Explorer users will find it a breeze to use but Macintosh users might find it a little cumbersome. The fact that it doesn't work well might disuade Mac' users from giving it a try. I paid the subscription fee but feel the product still needs a lot of development. Perhaps it should have been released as a free 'beta' copy first. Sorry, but I cannot recommend it at the moment. Regards Phil (phil_harvey@mac.com)

Macintosh Explorer X ReviewTried the trial - Version: 4.2, 11/22/2004 02:45PM PST

I think that the program is pretty nice, and reasonably fast.

BUT, it crashed hard when I used the Finder to disconnect a network drive (which had not even been viewed in Explorer X) - so it went straight to the trash. Finder-like tools which crash on the first run can't be kept around.

Macintosh Explorer X ReviewInteresting App - Version: 4.1, 7/22/2004 03:00AM PST

This application would definitely make a Windows user feel at home. It has a useful feature set, though I have a few issues with it. One: if you make changes in the Preferences you have to launch a new window for them to take effect, though changes made in the View menu apply immediately. Two: it does not remember window size. This is a problem for me because I prefer a larger font size and the left column won't retain sufficient width to display file names in one line, requiring a manual resize every time I open a window.

And finally, though this is not the author's fault, with the Finder window improvements in Panther, including the Side Panel, most of the advantages of Macintosh Explorer are gone, except for the occasional Windows convert.

I didn't think I'd like it at first because of the size it added to Finder windows, but the Side Panel has grown on me and now makes navigating Finder windows a snap. So I have no real need for a Finder replacement.

Macintosh Explorer X CommentaryYou might try using another name... - Version: 4.1, 7/21/2004 01:51PM PST

... If you are aiming to get new or former Windows users to use your product, then you are probably ok, but any real mac user is not going to touch this. I know I don't want anything on my computer that is going to make it act more like windows! If you want to get any real Mac customer base, you may want to change the name or something.
