Product Description:

Pic2Icon is a program that creates beautiful 128x128 Mac OS X icons for your pictures. Simply drop pictures or folders full of pictures onto the application and it will start creating icons. These icons will be applied to the pictures, so you can browse through them in the finder and you will be able to identify them without having to open them! Hopefully, Mac OS X will some day do this without a third party add-on.

What's new in this version:

    Features
  • Quits after processing if files were dragged in while app was quit.
  • You can now select a tab while dragging files into main window
  • Open Recent menu functionality added
      Other Changes:
    • Smart filtering, Pic2Icon doesn't even try to process files if it knows for sure the file has no image, which speeds things up!
    • Drag well now lights up in a more Mac OS X way (highlighted instead of bordered)
    • Statistics reflect a more accurate way to measure batch process times.
    • Now takes 0.0% CPU while idle
    • Updated Dutch Localization
    • Second Thread Statistics now gone. When I get the threading to work, i'll just have the statistics be cumulative.
      Bug Fixes:
    • Fixed a UI bug involved with the "Stop Creating Icons" button
    • Create dog ear now always saved to prefs properly
    • Fixed an NSLayoutManager crashing bug
    • Plugged some more memory leaks
    • Images with drop shadows now have the proper aspect ratio

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.1 or higher

Pic2Icon ReviewDeveloper went home - Version: 1.3, 3/19/2007 06:00AM PST

This is a great little app - and free to boot. However, it looks like Sugar Cube Software rolled up their tents and went home. Too bad. I'd gladly have forked over $10-$15 shareware fee for this little gem.
Couple of problems -
1. Don't run Adobe Illustrator .ai files through Pic2Icon - it screws up the resource fork (or something) - and the file icon disappears entirely. Had to remove the custom icon for each file (used FileBuddy) to restore.
2. This puppy will choke - if you feed it enough. Dumping a folder full of folders of hundreds of image files and Pic2Icon crashes. I tried to establish a threshold but the tests were inconsistent.
To MIke at SugarCube: Shaaaaane! Come baaaaaaack!

Pic2Icon Usage TipCould damage your system! - Version: 1.3, 2/28/2007 04:19PM PST

I used this app the other day, and afterwards I found various programmes wouldn't open, including System Profiler, Acrobat Reader, Dictionary, Disk Utility, even Mac Help. Only after a re-start would they work again. I'm not saying I'm certain this application caused that, but I can't think of anything else I did out of the ordinary that could have done it.

Something I can say for sure is that when I opened System Profiler after re-starting and looked for clues as to what had gone wrong, this is what I saw under logs, console.log in regards to Pic 2 Icon:

The function CGSReadObjectFromCString is obsolete. Use of this function may cause an overall degradation in performance of this application, or of the system as a whole.

The function CGSCreateDictionary is obsolete and will be removed in a Tiger update. Unfortunately, this app, or a library it uses, is using this obsolete function, and is therefore contributing to an overall degradation of system performance.

Sounds really bad to me, especially as the app hasn't been updated in ages and the developer's website no longer exists. Steer well clear, unless using an old OS version.

Pic2Icon ReviewThe Best!! - Version: 1.3, 2/7/2007 11:49AM PST

Compared to DropIcon 3.0.2 this one creates beautiful anti-aliased icons! An update would certainly be nice, it's been literally years but this is still a gem. My only complaint is that every now and then an icon fails to update in the finder. other than that 5/5 super super super program. I've tried nearly all of them and this is the best combined with quicksilver! drag and drop away! i'm actually creating 10,000 icons as I type this in the background for my images!
And if you want an even cooler solution combine quicksilver with Pic2Icon and Xee 2.0 as your default image browser! Sweetness!
