APC Powerchute ReviewHORRIBLE LACKING FEATURES - Version: 1.3.4, 8/4/2008 06:05PM PST

I've installed this software several times over the years and, today, fell for it once again after talking to an APC tech so I could change the sensitivity on my UPS. Lo and Behold, gee, you can't do squat on the Mac version. So, I loaded the software on my Windows Bootcamp and what a disgrace to APC for even attempting to give the MAC users a piece of "software". Compared to the Windows version, APC should even bother!! AND, neither should we. Just use the built-in OS X System Pref. It does a heckuva lot more!!

APC Powerchute CommentaryWho knows? - Version: 1.3.4, 2/10/2008 12:00AM PST

APC certainly don't tell you. Here are the questions:

1. Why should you install this product when OS X has built-in support for UPSes which works with APC models. They keep on maintaining the product so they must think there's a reason, but they don't reveal what it is anywhere!

2. The About... dialog in the prefpane says: "PowerChute Personal edition protects your operating system by gracefully shutting down your system in the event of an extended power problem", but the Read me file says: "The OS shutdown performed by this application is an emergency shutdown. No applications are closed and no application data is saved." WTF? Which one is true???

Who knows? It would be great if someone from APC could comment, but I'm not holding my breath!

APC Powerchute Troubleshooting Report10.5.1 won't sleep wit UPS connected via USB - Version: 1.3.4, 12/28/2007 07:36AM PST

I have an APC Back-UPS LS 700 connected to a G4/933 via USB. The Mac is running an erase-install of 10.5, updated to 10.5.1. OS X sees the UPS just fine without any special software installed (e.g. PowerChute), and it displays a good power percentage in the menu bar. OS X also recognizes the exact model of my UPS. The problem: if UPS is connected via USB, the Mac will not go into sleep. As soon as everything gets quiet and the monitors go black, it wakes up again - nothing of note in the system.log as to why it woke up. However, if I disconnect the USB cable going to the UPS, the Mac will go to sleep just fine. Anyone else see this? Any ideas how to fix it?

APC Powerchute Usage TipNOT NEEDED FOR OS X! FUNCTION IS BUILT-IN. - Version: 1.3.4, 6/27/2007 11:25PM PST

Um, people... no need to blast this software. Just don't install it; it is not necessary. OS X supports APC UPS products natively without any additional software. Just plug the USB cable in your mac (and the other end into the proper port on the UPS) and check the built-in Energy Saver control panel in your System Preferences. You will find all the automated shut-down controls automatically appear when the USB cable from the UPS is plugged in. APC makes great UPS devices and Apple supports them without any additional software installation.

APC should just put a note on the PowerChute software disk and tell people that Apple already includes PowerChute functionality in the Energy Saver control panel in OS X, so no software installation is necessary.

APC Powerchute ReviewWaiting for the future? - Version: 1.3.4, 5/26/2007 09:45AM PST

I have read the reviews here which dont exactly make me feel that secure about this software or the product . After installing I notice that the meter which is suppose to give me an indication of how much battery power there is shows full all the time even though Ive only just bought this product and Im waiting for the advised 16hr charge-up! Also as I run my mouse of the indicator and do a left hand click it changes from one colour and level to another! Im on OSX 10.4.9 which explains why this software is out of date even as we speak-Im afraid the lame excuse of an update is on its way is just not good enough in this day and age!

APC Powerchute ReviewAppaliing software... - Version: 1.3.4, 3/27/2007 10:27AM PST

Using this program with their otherwise excellent UPS is like having a Ferrari, but a wife who doesn't want you to drive past 30mph...

Worse, it's true that the shutdown process is buggy.

Finaly, they really don't seem to care about this product being buggy and not being up to par with the PC version. They don't even want to give access to their precious tech information, so one can't even write his own program for it, since Powerchute is so bad...

My advice, steer clear of this product and, sadly, their UPS product too, at least until they hire a programmer for a week or two to fix this software issue :)

APC Powerchute ReviewPowerChute 1.3.4 Worthless - Version: 1.3.4, 3/23/2007 12:49AM PST

APC's PowerChute (version 1.3.4) on Tiger 10.4.9 is absolutely worthless. It will not properly shut down your computer in a controlled state. APC support's response was "well we should have an update soon", well they don't even support 10.4.6 so I don't expect to see support very soon.

What will happen is that PowerChute will attempt the shutdown of your computer, fail, but then inform the UPS that it shutdown the system. Then after a time delay the UPS will cut the power to the computer just as if it weren't plugged into a UPS at all.

MOST DISAPPOINTED IN APC's RESPONSE TO MY COMPLAINTS!

Would love to see OS X Server native support for UPS in a OS X (non-server)
