Product Description:

Designed to protect Mac OS X systems with absolute accuracy and reliability, Dantz Retrospect Backup properly backs up and restores all Mac OS X files and information, including both the data and resource forks of multi-part files, HFS+ metadata, UNIX-style permissions and group ownership, and hard-linked files. Automatic scheduling ensures that backups run even when no Mac OS X user is logged in, and Retrospect client software allows entire networks of Macs to be backed up and restored across the LAN. Dantz Retrospect Backup v5.0 supports more storage devices than any other backup software available for the Mac OS. Hard disk drives, Apple CD-RW drives, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drives, SuperDrives and other writable and rewritable DVD drives, tape drives and libraries, and removable cartridge drives are all supported.

What's new in this version:

  • Duplicate and Archive Operations from Mac OS X Clients: This build fixes a bug that caused Retrospect to delete more files than it should when all of the following conditions were met--
    - Retrospect was performing a duplicate or archive operation
    - The "Move files" option was selected (by default, this option is not selected)
    - The "Don't delete empty folder after moving files" option was not selected (this is the default)
    - The source volume was a Mac OS X client
    - A selector (other than All Files) was used
  • Restoring from Older Backup Sets: When restoring from a pre-Retrospect 6.0 backup set, users should experience improved matching speed and no longer receive -108 (out of application memory) errors.
  • Computer Unbootable After a Restore: This build fixes an issue that could affect restores of Mac OS X systems that had multiple Mac OS X updates applied. Under certain rare circumstances, a complete system restore to an erased disk from a backup set containing many incremental backups would fail, resulting in the computer not being able to boot from the restored disk. NOTE: This issue did not affect “live” system restores.
  • Matching Files on Linux Clients: Retrospect now correctly matches source files on Linux clients to files that already exist in the destination. Retrospect no longer copies too many files.
  • Linux Clients Running on Red Hat 6.2: This build fixes a problem that prevented Retrospect from working with Linux clients running on Red Hat 6.2.
  • Files and Folders with High ASCII Characters: Retrospect can now back up files and folders with high ASCII characters (for example, characters with accents or umlauts) in their names from pre-Mac OS 9.0 and Linux Clients.
  • Volume Create Date and Duplicating: When duplicating an entire volume to another volume, Retrospect no longer sets the volume create date of the destination volume to match that of the source volume.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1
  • Mac OS X 10.0

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X including Panther (5.1 also included for Mac OS 9 with purchase of 6.0)

Dantz Retrospect CommentaryJust awful - Version: 8.1.622, 11/2/2009 11:07AM PST

This software is awful. Haven't been able to get a single backup since I installed it, as it always locks up when loading a tape. The Retrospect Engine then hogs the cpu at over 90% and when you try and force quit the engine, the whole server locks up. This was installed on a brand new fresh installation of Leopard server, so I know the system is fine. POS software.

Reverting back to Retrospect 6.1 allows for complete backups. Imagine that.

I finally gave up Retrospect earlier this year, I was a user since Dantz Retrospect 2. Version 2 through 5 were pretty good option for mac users back in the 80's and 90's, not anymore in my opinion. I switched to Bru Server and life is good.

I really is as bad as they say. I've been trying to back up a MacBook Pro connected via Ethernet to my desktop machine. The process hangs at some point during the backup and you are greeted with the spinning pizza of death. Do you want this aggravation? Are you a masochist? Do you have sins for which you wish to atone?

There are better options out there. Send these people a message.
