Product Description:

Designed to protect Mac OS X systems with absolute accuracy and reliability, Dantz Retrospect Backup v5.0 properly backs up and restores all Mac OS X files and information, including both the data and resource forks of multi-part files, HFS+ metadata, UNIX-style permissions and group ownership, and hard-linked files. Automatic scheduling ensures that backups run even when no Mac OS X user is logged in, and Retrospect client software allows entire networks of Macs to be backed up and restored across the LAN. Dantz Retrospect Backup v5.0 supports more storage devices than any other backup software available for the Mac OS. Hard disk drives, Apple CD-RW drives, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drives, SuperDrives and other writable and rewritable DVD drives, tape drives and libraries, and removable cartridge drives are all supported by version 5.0.

Linux Support
Retrospect 5.1 (Desktop and higher editions) now supports Red Hat Linux clients.
Windows Client Support
Retrospect 5.1 now supports Retrospect 6.5 for Windows clients
Bootable CD
The Retrospect 5.1 product CD now provides bootable Mac OS X disaster recovery. Retrospect includes a limited Mac OS, which allows users to recover from a disastrous computer failure by booting the computer, opening or rebuilding catalog files, and restoring from the backup media. This feature is supported with all Macintosh models that support Mac OS 10.2.6
CD/DVD Drive Configurator
The CD/DVD Drive Configurator tests CD and DVD recordable drives and builds a customer driver to support many recent and future CD/DVD drives that have not yet been tested by DantzLab.
File System Plug-in for optical media
A file system plug-in enables Macintosh OS X 10.2 and later to recognize Retrospect-formatted optical media. The plug-in allows the Macintosh Finder to recognize the file system of Retrospect-formatted optical discs that are inserted when Retrospect is not running. This allows users to leave Retrospect backup media in the drive for unattended backups.
New Power Management features
A new preference option enables the computer running Retrospect to enter Sleep mode following an unattended backup if no other scripts are scheduled to run within 12 hours.
DVD-RAM Support
Dantz has greatly improved support for DVD-RAM devices.
Selectors
The All files Except Cache files selector now includes Safari Cache files.
Additional Changes

Users will now see fewer redundant warning messages.
Overall product stability has been improved.

New and Changed Products and Services
Annual Support and Maintenance is now available for all Retrospect for Macintosh editions and for client packages.
Client Support
Retrospect Desktop 5.1 now includes support for 2 clients as a standard feature. These 2 clients can be Macintosh, Windows or Linux in any combination.
Documentation
An addendum has been added to the User's Manual to explain the changes from 5.0 to 5.1. No changes have been made to the main body of the manual.

This software is awful. Haven't been able to get a single backup since I installed it, as it always locks up when loading a tape. The Retrospect Engine then hogs the cpu at over 90% and when you try and force quit the engine, the whole server locks up. This was installed on a brand new fresh installation of Leopard server, so I know the system is fine. POS software.

Reverting back to Retrospect 6.1 allows for complete backups. Imagine that.

I finally gave up Retrospect earlier this year, I was a user since Dantz Retrospect 2. Version 2 through 5 were pretty good option for mac users back in the 80's and 90's, not anymore in my opinion. I switched to Bru Server and life is good.

I really is as bad as they say. I've been trying to back up a MacBook Pro connected via Ethernet to my desktop machine. The process hangs at some point during the backup and you are greeted with the spinning pizza of death. Do you want this aggravation? Are you a masochist? Do you have sins for which you wish to atone?

There are better options out there. Send these people a message.
