Product Description:

Designed to protect Mac OS X systems with absolute accuracy and reliability, Dantz Retrospect Backup properly backs up and restores all Mac OS X files and information, including both the data and resource forks of multi-part files, HFS+ metadata, UNIX-style permissions and group ownership, and hard-linked files. Automatic scheduling ensures that backups run even when no Mac OS X user is logged in, and Retrospect client software allows entire networks of Macs to be backed up and restored across the LAN. Dantz Retrospect Backup v5.0 supports more storage devices than any other backup software available for the Mac OS. Hard disk drives, Apple CD-RW drives, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drives, SuperDrives and other writable and rewritable DVD drives, tape drives and libraries, and removable cartridge drives are all supported.

What's new in this version:

  • All-new, customizable user interface with remote management capabilities;
  • Powerful new engine capable of multiple, simultaneous backup, restore, and copy operations;
  • Backup-to-disk features that include support for local and network hard disks, combining multiple volumes into a single destination, adjustable storage usage limitations, and disk grooming to remove out-of-date backup data and free up space;
  • True disk-based backup staging for later transfer to tape or portable media, as well as transfers of individual point-in-time backups between destination media sets;
  • Simultaneous streaming of data to multiple disk or tape storage systems;
  • Improved tape library barcode tracking and automatic tape drive cleaning;
  • Custom reporting on nearly any piece of information that Retrospect tracks, including sources not backed up in n days, available/used media set capacity, and performance data;
  • Better email notification for various completed operations, media requests, and warnings;
  • Certified AES-256 encryption of backup data;
  • Advanced network client support with support for multiple network interfaces and a wake-on-LAN feature to wake sleeping computers for backup, reducing overall energy expenditure;
  • Complete backup of physical and virtual Windows Server 2003/2008 and Windows XP/Vista clients, including those running within VMware Fusion and Parallels, with system state preservation and backup of open files.

Operating System Requirements:

This software is awful. Haven't been able to get a single backup since I installed it, as it always locks up when loading a tape. The Retrospect Engine then hogs the cpu at over 90% and when you try and force quit the engine, the whole server locks up. This was installed on a brand new fresh installation of Leopard server, so I know the system is fine. POS software.

Reverting back to Retrospect 6.1 allows for complete backups. Imagine that.

I finally gave up Retrospect earlier this year, I was a user since Dantz Retrospect 2. Version 2 through 5 were pretty good option for mac users back in the 80's and 90's, not anymore in my opinion. I switched to Bru Server and life is good.

I really is as bad as they say. I've been trying to back up a MacBook Pro connected via Ethernet to my desktop machine. The process hangs at some point during the backup and you are greeted with the spinning pizza of death. Do you want this aggravation? Are you a masochist? Do you have sins for which you wish to atone?

There are better options out there. Send these people a message.
