Apple iPhoto Troubleshooting ReportiPhoto 8.1 quit on open - Version: 8.1, 9/4/2009 08:14PM PST

iPhoto is quitting unexpectedly when I open it. Using 8.1 on 10.6 (but also happened while running 10.5.8). Presume it has something to do with the library. I tried opening another library and pulling pictures from the old one but I can't do that... the old library I'm having problems with isn't available to import photos from it. (using the file/import to library...) I've tried holding down shift ctl cmd and rebuilding thumb pictures, etc. no luck. Any ideas? Appreciate the help.

Apple iPhoto ReviewIPhoto 8.0 and updates - Version: 8.0.3, 6/6/2009 05:43PM PST

The following comments are not mine alone. Go to Apple discussions and look up comments on IPhoto 8.03.

IPhoto 8.0 and updates is a huge memory hog. My Activity monitor registered in excess of 130 mb.

This new version is very slow. Since I only have 512 mb of memory most of the editing features are very slow or don't work at all. I have tried everything, except more memory, and even that might not work. I have explored Apple discussions, called Apple Tech and nothing solves it. I also only have 3,000 picts.

Though the face recognition is great, it is not worth it with this slow hog. Save your money and stay with 7.0 and or use Adobe Elements. (only uses 2.5mb of memory) Once you order the software and use it, Apple will not take it back.

Apple iPhoto Troubleshooting ReportThe update “iPhoto Update” can’t be installed. - Version: 8.0.2, 5/23/2009 08:19AM PST

There were three updates waiting for me, Mac OS X 10.4.7, iPhoto 8.0.2 and one other. The other two downloaded and installed without issue. However, the iPhoto 8.0.2 update returns the following error:

"A networking error has occurred: Cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."

Especially informative is that (-3001). Now I know exactly what to do. Reminds me of the old Mac OS error codes.

At any rate, anyone got any ideas????

Apple iPhoto ReviewPhoto management application for home users - Version: 8.0.2, 5/17/2009 09:14AM PST

iPhoto is a capable application for managing your home digital photo library. This version introduces face recognition and geotagging, which integrate it more tightly with iWeb, the website builder for me.com.

iPhoto's objective is simple: manage your digital photo's. iPhoto can import photo's from any digital camera, perhaps with the exception of the digital SLRs introduced today. It has simple photo editing tools, quite capable for the average user. Photo's can be sorted into "events" (or folders), and iPhoto is smart enough to split what seems to be different events when importing photos.

On the output side iPhoto has several nifty tools for producing printed product. There are templates for photo albums, scrapbooks, calendars, etc all of which work very well. It certainly beats trying to do something similar in Word or Powerpoint. Where available, iPhoto can also upload your photos to have a professionally printed album made for you. iPhoto also has shortcuts for sening pictures by email.

Geotagging (adding location information to a photo) works well but really needs iWeb to shine as a function, like travel maps. Face recognition ditto. Actual recognition accuracy is very poor, quite embarrassing really, although correcting mistakes is easy without lifting fingers from the keyboard. On the upside, iPhoto loads much faster (feels like 3x) than previous versions.

Is iPhoto for you? Not if you're a professional photographer with ten of thousands of images - iPhoto's features are too limiting. But it's great for the average home user, and the price (part of the iLife package) is unbeatable. That said, it is quite a tepid update from the previous version, and given that this app gets updates every year, you may want to skip this one.

iLife comes free with every new Mac. If you have "an older" Mac (pre 2008) you may well want to consider upgrading.

I see a lot of people who like iPhoto , I used it for about a year and in that time it took over my computer like a parasite.I have in the vicinty of 150,000 photos. Many transferred from film and slides. It was no easy task trying to catalogue them in iPhoto (took 6 hours a day for about 8 months) , it fought me at every turn , I believe that advances in software should be making things simpler and easier, but this program reminded me why I quit Windows. So out with the eraser and scrubbed iPhoto from system and ended up with a lot of space in which to reload my photos (once again) the new programs (got one for cataloging and one for fixing photos) took up less space than iPhoto and when all was said and done , instead of a program that hogged all my hard drive the new ones used something like 80% less space. To top it off they were half the price of a Mac substitute , offer free upgrades for my lifetime, rate up there with Photoshop and the like, give me the results I require and are easy to use and intuitive.Next step is to rid myself of the other parasites iDVD and iMovie , at last found worthy adversaries to these bloated programs built by ex Microsoft afficianados.
