This does the job of encoding CDs using the LAME encoder without fuss. Works fine using OS X 10.5.

Awesome GUI for LAME encoding. A snap to use, creates great sounding mp3s, and it's free.
But, why should you use this, when iTunes does the same thing? Because iTunes has the worst mp3 encoder I've heard in my life.
Seriously, just give this a shot and be amazed at the difference. That tinny sound isn't inherent to the mp3 format, just Apple's version of it.

Lame is the best encoder, and this little app makes it a snap to use the LAME encoder on the Mac.
NMP3 Ripper v0.6.7 and tracks with Swedish characters - Version: 0.6.7, 7/14/2003 03:08AM PST

I discovered that tracks with Swedish characters (or any high ascii I guess) will not be encoded by NMP3 Ripper.
After some testing and thinking I found that new CDs that I have not played in iTunes and therefor show up only as "Audio CD" on the Desktop will not be affected.
It's when the Finder/iTunes set the name of a CD and the tracks with info from CDDB, and the tracks contains Swedish characters that NMP3 Ripper bugs out.
So my solution for now is to make sure iTunes is not running before I insert a new CD that I want to rip. If iTunes already know about the CD I use the program iCDc to erase the CDs entry in the file "CD Info.cidb".

After my initial bad experience with NMP3 0.6.5, I emailed Stu Belden about the problems I was having. Not only did he respond within 15 minutes (on a Sunday, no less) but within an hour he had come up with a new build (0.6.6) that fixed the problem! I'm completely blown away. This is freeware, for christ's sake! Just think if software we actually paid for came with such great support...
I can only assume that Stu will be posting the new 0.6.6 build of this program soon. In the meantime, I'm going to be happily ripping MP3s and feeling very privileged indeed!

I'd love to use it, but...

The Expert command line configuration option doesn't work at all. The program just hangs. It gets as far as creating a folder for the output files and then... nothing. Using the preset configs isn't much better--it gets halfway through ripping one track and then it quits suddenly. I'm running it on a 500MHz AGP G4 desktop with 512 MB RAM and OS 10.2.6.
Wonderful application

After the troubles of iTunes4 and the relatively (to LAME) lifeless results with AAC (even at 192), I don't mind the slowness of the LAME encoder. Have now gone back to iTunes 3.01 and NMP3 Ripper. Would just like to thank the developer for making this available. So much easier than installing all the bits and piece of the LAME software and working in Terminal.
Worked for a while, but now just hangs - Version: 0.6.1, 5/9/2003 07:19PM PST

It worked pretty well (with a few quirks, such as settings changing without being clicked, and sometimes not grabbing CDDB info correctly). Now when I click "Rip CD", it just hangs, making me force-quit it. I tried deleting prefs, but same result.

at decent sound quality is slow. That’s the way it is. Definitely worth the effort and time though. Quality so far better than the horrible results from iTunes. And better than ogg or MP4 at the high bit-rates.
This is MUCH…

better than MuseP3, despite what one clearly biased person says.
