OggVorbis QuickTime Component Usage TipOggVorbis component has been replaced by xiphqt - Version: r45, 1/24/2006 06:31PM PST

The OggVorbis QuickTime Component is no longer being developed and is out-of-date. It has been incorporated into the xiphqt component available at http://www.xiph.org/quicktime/ where development continues.

If you have the OggVorbis.component in your /Library/QuickTime folder it should be removed before installing the xiphqt component (which will be named OggImport.component

OggVorbis QuickTime Component CommentaryFollow JMAX's instructions if you are under 10.3 or earlier - Version: r45, 1/21/2006 07:42AM PST

Gotta respect the ogg pluggin, but if you are using 10.3 or earlier you have to install this one manually with a little hacking. Follow JMAX's instructions in this thread. They work.

OggVorbis QuickTime Component Troubleshooting ReportRemove _all_ old components to make it work - Version: r45, 10/29/2005 02:15PM PST

Hi,

I thought I'd put it in here for everyone to see:

I copied the new component to /Library/QuickTime/, and at first iTunes still crashed. Then I looked and found that the installer of the old Ogg component had _also_ copied it to ~/Library/QuickTime/ (the Library/QuickTime in your home directory).

Remove _both_, install the new one, and it works flawlessly.

Great work!

OggVorbis QuickTime Component Troubleshooting ReportAfter much aggro, it works... - Version: r45, 10/24/2005 06:31AM PST

...and to hopefully save others the frustration, here's what I went through. Note that this probably only pertains to folks running OS 10.3.x.

I was happy to see there's finally an update that works in Quicktime 7.x. I downloaded version r45, installed (and reinstalled, and reinstalled) it as per the ReadMe file's instructions, and... it didn't work. (I'm running 10.3.9, iTunes 6.0.1, and QuickTime 7.0.3.)

Luckily, I'm the persistent type... Went to the developer page at SourceForge, and on the surface there seemed to be nothing that addressed why r45 doesn't work. So, checked their discussion forum's Help Forum. In a discussion thread that didn't even pertain to r45 problems when running Panther, I found a link - to the REAL developer's site - that finally solved my problems: http://zskl.zsk.p.lodz.pl/~skali/oggvorbis.html

It states:

"QuickTime unknown error (-50); "can't open library: @loader_path/../Frameworks(...)" log messages

If the revision 45 doesn't work for you (you see the above error in QuickTime Player or console/system log files contains dyld error messages after you try to play ogg files in iTunes) and you are on a pre-10.4 system, please install the frameworks from revision 24."

Which you can download at: http://zskl.zsk.p.lodz.pl/~skali/oggvorbis_r24.dmg

Remove your older OggVorbis.component file from /Library/QuickTime or ~/Library/QuickTime, and remove old Ogg.framework and Vorbis.framework files from ~/Library/Frameworks or /Library/Frameworks (if these files exist on your drive).

Open the r45 disk image, and copy the r45 OggVorbis.component folder to ~/Library/QuickTime or /Library/QuickTime. Open the r24 disk image, and copy the Ogg.framework and Vorbis.framework folders to ~/Library/Frameworks or /Library/Frameworks.

And now you'll be able to play your OggVorbis files again! (Hopefully.) I don't know if it will work on any other Panther OS X versions than 10.3.9, since that's what I run.

One thing of note - your iTunes equalizer will not EQ any OggVorbis files, and bitrates will still be displayed as 'Unknown' - apparently these may not ever be possible unless Apple does some major revamping to QuickTime. And I'm not holding my breath...

Documentation for the OggVorbis component is either lacking, nonexistent or very convoluted to find, and I have no idea why the r45 download doesn't include the framework files that are 100% necessary if running on pre-Tiger systems. But at least I can finally listen to my .oggs again. Hope this'll help someone out there...

OggVorbis QuickTime Component CommentaryCrashes iTunes 4.9 In Panther & Tiger - Version: 1.0d8, 8/30/2005 09:51PM PST

Nice endeavor, but crashed iTunes 4.9 under Panther 10.3.9 on one machine with QT 7.0.1 installed, and crashed iTunes 4.9 under Tiger 10.4.2 on another, also running QT 7.0.1.

Is the previous poster saying that it will work if QT is downgraded to 6.5.2? If so, is the hassle of downgrading worth it, just to play ogg vorbis in iTunes? The onus is on the developers to make this work under the current Mac OS, and users shouldn't have to downgrade in order to meet with success. That is moving backwards.

I would really like to see the developers get this to work properly without the crashes, as ogg vorbis is becoming an increasingly popular audio format. And what about adding mpc and flac compatibility as well? That would make this an even more excellent program!

This also means it will crash things that use Quicktime such as iTunes. Remove /Library/Quicktime/OggVorbis.component or downgrade Quicktime. Don't know of an alternative except to use a non-Quicktime based player.

If you've still got Panther and want to use this, you can downgrade your Quicktime from 7 back to 6.5.2 using Apple's reinstaller here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652reinstallerformac.html

It doesn't look like it will work for Tiger though.

OggVorbis QuickTime Component ReviewWay to go, but won't do Tiger - Version: 1.0d8, 5/7/2005 06:34PM PST

This is known to have issues working under Tiger. For OS X Panther or Jaguar, it's working well.

Once this is installed in library/quicktime, you may use iTunes Convert to MP3 function (hold down Option while clicking Advanced menu) to convert an ogg vorbis audio file into MP3. Then you have an audio track you can work with just about anything else on the mac.

This plugin will ideally allow quicktime player and quicktime support to include this open source audio compression format for playback.
