Product Description:

Auntie is a freeware BBC News ticker for MacOS X. It has no relationship to the (apparently no longer supported) MacOS 7 program of the same name, other than having the same function.

Many aspects of the ticker are configurable, including font, color, opacity and ticker speed. Clicking on a scrolling headline will take you to the associated web page. Headlines are also listed in a dock menu to jump to any one of them.

Auntie is provided free of charge because you really ought to pay attention to what's going on in the world.

What's new in this version:

Fixed 'hide on deactivate' behavior that popped up in 1.3.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Auntie Troubleshooting ReportPossible Conflict with Safari 2? - Version: 1.3.1, 9/11/2005 07:10AM PST

I've been using this application for a few years now, mostly without trouble. It's simple and it works. I'm now using Tiger and Safari 2.0.1. Recently I've been experiencing significant problems with page downloads, both on my own machine and my father's. It may just be coincidence, but I've noticed these problems disappear when Auntie isn't open. Unfortunately I don't know anything about programming, but I wondered whether it's possible that Auntie, in fetching the RSS feed from the BBC, is somehow conflicting with Safari 2, which also has the ability to fetch RRS feeds. For the record, I don't subscribe to the BBC's RSS feeds.

Additionally, I've noticed that if I put Auntie in startup items, though it opens, it doesn't display the ticker. I've now opted to open the application manually as this brings up the display immediately.

Version 1.3 was flawed, briefly. Version 1.3.1 resolved all issues. It's a terrific little app. Highly recommended to those who wish non-biased news reporting.
