Synchronize! Pro X ReviewWayyyy too expensive when there are free alternatives that work even better than this - Version: 6.1, 11/7/2009 03:45AM PST

I gotta say, if what the previous reviewer (neuaddbwll_dotmac, below) said is true, that's one of the scummiest things I've ever heard a developer do. Such a dev should be boycotted. I guess it doesn't surprise me too much though, considering what an outrageous price they charge for this ($100!). These days you can get a bootable backup app that's wayyyy more modern (in other words, doesn't look like a Windows 98 app) for half the cost.

For instance, Synk Pro (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31146) is a terrific app that only costs $45. I bought a license for it maybe five years ago, and they'll still respond immediately and answer any question or solve any problem by email or phone (though I only ever contacted them twice -- both times because I had screwed up - not the app). Or even Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware, so it's free if you have no scruples and just use it without donating) or SuperDuper! ($28 shareware), both of which can handle some fairly complex setups and will make bootable backups. So there's no way I'm going to fork out a C-note for this app. Its pice alone knocks off two stars my review, the graphics knock off another, and the way it works compared to other such apps lowers my evaluation yet further down to one star.

Synchronize! Pro X ReviewDo they really want to sell this? - Version: 6.1, 9/5/2009 04:24AM PST

I've used an old version of this product for many years. I emailed the developer to ask whether the current version was compatible with MobileMe. He replied to say that I'd have to pay to upgrade to the latest version before he would answer my question! It's a shame because I'd always liked the product but there's no way I'm going to pay $50 to have such a simple question answered.

Anyway, I've now found SuperFlexibleSynchronizer which seems even better than Synchronize Pro and is cheaper!

Synchronize! Pro X ReviewMore interested in unlicensed copies than licensed users - Version: 5.1.3, 7/4/2009 07:23PM PST

decadence
Every time you run Synchronize! Pro , it installs parasiteware in the background of your Mac which is very difficult to turn off. The parasiteware doesn't do much except steal processor cycles (going up and down between 0 and 6% in my experience).

That's a pretty heavy performance price to pay.

Synchronize! Pro X used to be a great product. Then the developer became more obsessed with all the unlicensed copies in use rather than the licensed copies that are in use.

Hugh Sontag would do well to make his customers advocates, knock his price down a bit and sell to a much wider public.

Instead he gives rude answers and cripples our computers.

Look elsewhere.

PS. I now own and use SuperDuper and find the atmosphere a lot friendlier and more user positive. No parasiteware.

About 18 months ago I left a negative review of SP based on my experience with both the product and the company.

My main beef wasn't the pricing structure but the poor, patronising support and bug-ridden app. My final comment was: Never trust *any* company that has a "lots of people use our product and no one complains" attitude.

Looking at recent comments from Qdea, they're still up to their old games. "Tens of thousands of customers worldwide have found that the quality and reliability of the software and the timely, expert technical support are worth the purchase price."

Do three things before buying this app:
1. Read through the feedback. See how many justifiable negatives there are.
2. Ask Qdea to justify their statement that they have "Tens of thousands of customers worldwide" and find out how big the company is in terms of personnel. Developing and maintaining a crucial app like this and providing good end-user support requires a team of people if it's done properly.
3. Try the alternatives. I've use Tri-Edre's Tri-Backup for 18 months without a single problem and I run the IT for a large design studio.

Just my 2c worth...

I have been a Mac user for 25 years (yes, I started with the very first edition), and I've been a believer in bootable clones for as long as there's been software to do it. I've tried Carbon Copy Cloner and I have used SuperDuper and pretty well all the cloning software. Nothing is as good as SPX.

Firstly, Qdea has the next version of its software ready almost immediately there's a new system or system update. This is crucial. Carbon Copy Cloner works until there's a system update and then it's useless until they get around to doing an update, which can take months and months. If you want to update your clone every week, as I do, CCC is of no use whatsoever. And the same comment can be made about most of the cloning software out there. SuperDuper is pretty good, but way, way slower than SPX.

Secondly, the tech support from Qdea is very quick and very helpful.

SPX costs more than the other cloners, but, in my view, if you're serious about having bootable clones always ready, the money is well worth spending.

I've had several occasions where my clones saved the day in a big way. On holiday in Europe, my MacBook Pro was stolen from the hotel room. On another occasion, a brand new MacBook Pro had a failure of the logic board. In both cases, my little back-up drive with the bootable clone was not touched. I found another Mac and was up and running in five minutes. No data loss at all (in particular my Aperture library).

In short, for real world serious use of bootable clones, you really can't beat SPX. And I should make clear that I have no other connection to Qdea than having been a very satisfied customer for years. A licence lasts for two years and I get any and all SPX updates and new versions during the two years after renewal. Then I keep using the latest version until Qdea comes out with another update or version, and I renew the licence to be able to take advantage of the software for another two years.

Qdea Tech Support
You don't pay per year for Synchronize! Pro X. Instead, you get free updates and free technical support for two years from your purchase. You can use any of the versions released within two years of your purchase forever.

When the two years is up, and you decide you want to use a newer version, you need to purchase a license renewal for half price. This is a better deal than most other software companies, whose goal is to get you to purchase an upgrade every twelve to 18 months.

Tens of thousands of customers worldwide have found that the quality and reliability of the software and the timely, expert technical support are worth the purchase price.

Congratulation on the latest version of Synchronize Pro X. The increase in bootable backup speed is amazing. The program has never failed me and I use it every night to make external bootable backups of my computers. Honestly, I couldn't live without it. I also find the developer incredibly helpful and considerate.
