DivX 5.0 introduces a new generation of DivX� video technology, optimized for "true content": full-sized, full-speed video content that people actually enjoy watching, not small, low bitrate video that hurts your eyes and makes you bang your head against your monitor in frustration. We want you to enjoy watching your DivX videos, and we work hard to satisfy that need for movie-lovers everywhere. DivX 5.0 raises the bar for video technologies everywhere with a universal architecture, increased optimizations and encoding performance, significantly improved visual quality, MPEG-4 compatibility including a new MPEG-4 based DivX file format, a complete command line interface for advanced users, and a host of other improvements that will appear to novice and power users alike.

What's new in this version:

Compatibility with all versions of DivX video content. DivX 5.0 Alpha for Mac OS can play every version of DivX video ever created, from prior to 3.11 alpha to the brand new DivX Pro 5.0.
MP3 Audio Fix. The Alpha version includes a first pass at a fix for the MP3 audio QuickTime bug. This bug prevented MP3 audio from playing properly in AVI files. We're working on a workaround, and it works pretty well, but it will continue to get better. Let us know how it works.
Improved encoding and decoding performance. DivX 5.0 Alpha is initially optimized for G3 processors. We still haven't finished full G4 optimizations. Those are coming.
MPEG-4 compatibility. DivX 5.0 can decode MPEG-4 Simple Profile, MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile, and H.263 video (all levels). It is also able to encode fully MPEG-4 Simple Profile compliant video (ISO/IEC 14496-2).
Scalable. DivX video has been test on and can work on a wide range of video bitrates, from 28 Kbps to 9 Mbps, depending upon your encoding needs.

The last part of the installation executes an AppleScript designed to tell Safari to refresh its plugin list. Unfortunately to do this the folks at DivX decided to go through the process list. This is an unsafe operation, particularly when you have many programs running. On my machine it paniced the kernel. I highly recommend either doing a manual install using Pacifist or only installing with no programs running.

The problematic AppleScript is this:
