Product Description:

One word: ENCODER. You asked for it, and now you have it. This beta release includes, for the first time anywhere, a bonafide DivX video encoder on Mac OS. We've also included new PowerPC G4 and G3 optimizations and a DivX Decoder Configuration application (which serves the same purpose as its Windows cousin). The DivX Validator application is largely unchanged in this release.

This version includes encoding features comparable to the DivX Pro product on Windows. Once installed, you will have 15 days to trial the software. After the 15 days, the software will be disabled (although you can continue to decode video), and you should visit www.divx.com for details on a final product release.

If you don't know how to encode video on Mac OS, find someone who does and ask them for help. Suffice you say, you'll need to use the DivX encoder in conjunction with an application that encodes video. QuickTime Pro will also do the trick.

This version also includes an MPEG 1 Layer 3 encoder, known as the "DivX MP3 Encoder". The encoder is implemented as a QuickTime audio codec component, and can be configured through the DivX video export options dialog.

What's new in this version:

  • User definable height and width for resizing (encoder).
  • Generic MPEG-4 support. (decoder)
  • Pixel Aspect Ratio changed to the default setting of 1:1 (encoder).
  • Fixed (Encoder): Random crash from re-opening the settings GUI after previously closing it in the same session.
  • Fixed (Decoder): A delay of up to 8 days may occur when notifying users of an available update.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1
  • Mac OS X 10.0

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.0 or higher
  • QuickTime 6.0 or higher

DivX Troubleshooting ReportInstaller may cause kernel panic - Version: 7.2, 11/17/2009 06:10PM PST

The last part of the installation executes an AppleScript designed to tell Safari to refresh its plugin list. Unfortunately to do this the folks at DivX decided to go through the process list. This is an unsafe operation, particularly when you have many programs running. On my machine it paniced the kernel. I highly recommend either doing a manual install using Pacifist or only installing with no programs running.

The problematic AppleScript is this:

tell application "System Events"
set myList to (name of every process)
end tell
