What's new in this version:

4.0.1 release notes:
  • At a Scan Bit Depth setting of 8 bits the scan time of the COOLSCAN V ED, over a USB 2.0 connection, has been reduced. Scan time may not be reduced with some computers.
  • When the SUPER COOLSCAN 8000 ED was connected to a dual-CPU Macintosh running Mac OS X, the computer would freeze when Nikon Scan 4 (version 4.0.0) was launched. This problem has been corrected.

4.0 release notes:
This version of Nikon Scan does not support SCSI based scanners. SCSI scanners are not supported on Mac OS X. Many features have been added to Nikon Scan 4.0:
  • The Digital DEE function has been added. (Available when SUPER COOLSCAN 9000 ED, SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED, or COOLSCAN V ED are connected.)
  • The Scan Image Enhancer function has been added. (Available when SUPER COOLSCAN 9000 ED, SUPER COOLSCAN 5000 ED, or COOLSCAN V ED are connected.)
  • A function to start up Nikon View has been added. (Nikon View 6 must be installed for using this function.)
  • The "CMYK" option for the color model menu has been removed and conversion to CMYK profile can now be selected when saving images in TIFF (CMYK) format.
  • Under Mac OS X, any user including those without "Computer administrator" can use Nikon Scan 4.0. (Administrator privileges are required to install and uninstall Nikon Scan 4.0.0.)
  • The default settings for thumbnail and preview display orientatiosn have been changed to landscape orientation.
  • A thumbnail cache function to preserve the created thumbnail image until the film or holder is replaced has been added.
  • "Inkjet Printer (360 dpi)", "Dye Sublimation Printer (300 dpi)", and "400 dpi Printer" options have been added to the Custom menu in the Crop palette.
  • "Copy Crop Settings to Clipboard" option has been added to the Crop palette settings menu.
  • Tool buttons have been added at the top of the image window.
  • The files from multiple batch scans are now saved with sequentially-numbered names.

Nikon Scan ReviewNot for Rosetta emulation (batch scan mode) - Version: 4.0.2, 11/4/2008 10:58AM PST

I had to go back to an older Mac to scan my slides. This workes flowless. However, the userinterface is not very intuitive. Nikon should have a look on people working with there Nikon Scan software.
The scanner itself is well built and does an excellent job. What a pitty, that the software lacks behind it.
Payed a lot and there is not upgrade to Intel macs

Nikon Scan Troubleshooting ReportWhile in Leopard Limbo-Dig use a Classic Mac - Version: 4.0.2, 5/31/2008 10:01AM PST

Same crashing here with 10.5.3 on a MacPro. Fortunately, I keep my Blue & White G3 next to the MacPro. I share monitor and keyboard with a switch. So I was able to install Nikon Scan 4 onto the G3 from the CD I got with my Nikon Scanner (Coolscan V). OS 9 seemed to read the CD fine and even updated Nikon Scan. I also have an old Photoshop 7 on that computer. Sure it's a little slow, but it runs and I can copy the files over to the MacPro. I hope this helps.

great scanner shame about the neglected support for the software. Since upgrading to Intel Mac this piece of software is of no use. Crashes in CS 2 and crashes as stand alone. I sit here with two options for out with a lot of cash for a 3rd party ! or buy a new scanner (I have a LS8000ED and my next will NOT be Nikon) arghhhh. I remember having to wait a lonnnnnggg time for Nikon to make a OSX compatible version and now...they can not follow. Also their Amiga look Nikon View is laughable.
