ShredIt X Usage TipFinder's built-in secure empty trash does the job - Version: 5.7.1, 6/25/2007 09:42PM PST

I have not used Shredit X. I am familiar with the workings of the Finder's secure empty trash, and with the "erase free space" feature of the "Disk Utility" application shipped with OS X.

Both can already do a 35-pass Gutmann erase - which is about as paranoid as you can get.

Terminal users can also opt for the 'srm' tool which is also part of OS X.

I'd advise anyone to check for features that they might already have for free.

Because of some unrelated problems, I reinstalled my OS a little while ago. Just recently, I used ShreditX to delete some sensitive data, dropping the files onto the application icon. It acted, then informed me that the files had been DELETED and *not* shredded, because ShreditX was not registered.

Argh! No warning or anything. It WAS a registered copy, but I hadn't run the application since my OS reinstallation, so the registration information was gone (or that's what I suppose happened). ShreditX didn't tell me it wasn't registered anymore until AFTER deleting (but not shredding) the data. Now the only way to securely delete those files is to devote hours to erasing my free space.

What's the point to this demo function? How does simply deleting files/folders demo the software? Just one gaffe like this has turned me off from this application.
