Product Description:

Supercal is an application that can accurately correct monitor response curves using only visual tests. Unlike most calibration applications, no assumptions are made about the display's response curves, so it can make highly accurate and detailed corrections for any display technology (CRT, LCD, DLP, Plasma, etc.) used in desktop, wall mount, and projection systems. Using only your eye as the measuring device, this program is capable of producing a very neutral gray ramp. In addition, profiles with different target gamma and white balance settings can be created without repeating the entire calibration process.

What's new in this version:

  • SuperCal is a universal binary and runs natively on both Intel and PowerPC machines.
  • You can now use the arrow keys to adjust the sliders when making measurements. The left/right arrows move the horizontal sliders, and the up/down arrows move the vertical sliders. Holding shift while pressing an arrow moves the slider in greater increments.
  • The black level measurement screens now have an animated measurement pattern. Simply adjust the brightness slider downward until you can >>>just<<< no longer see the lower moving rectangle, but you can still see the upper moving rectangle. To put this another way, you want the point one step below where you can still see the lower rectangle. The moving upper rectangle is really just a safety measure to indicate when you have lowered the brightness slider too far. If you can no longer see the upper rectangle, you've gone too far, but this will usually only occur if you're in a very bright environment. If your environment is dark, you'll probably always be able to see the upper rectangle.
  • SuperCal now extracts the display color values from the default profile for your display. For this reason, it is no longer necessary to choose a value from the list on the "display colors" step. This step will be changed in a future build to remove the list and to display the actual values that were extracted from the default profile.
  • Because SuperCal now uses the actual display colors for your display, you could and should update any old profiles you have. Updating your profiles is very easy to do and does not require you to repeat any of your measurements. The following steps will update the tristimulus data while leaving your previous calibration data intact.
    1. Launch SuperCal.
    2. In Step 3, select the existing profile from the pop-up menu.
    3. Skip over the all the subsequent steps and go to the last possible Step 12.
    4. Save your now updated profile, naming and replacing the existing profile if you like. If you have more than one profile, repeat these steps for each of the profiles you have created with SuperCal.

SuperCal ReviewProblems with test patterns - Version: 1.2.0a51, 1/14/2010 10:45PM PST

The test patterns are not as described in the instructions. The slider has an effect, but there is no way of determining where to set the slider. This is on a 30" Cinema Display.

SuperCal Troubleshooting ReportProblems with test patterns - Version: 1.2.0a51, 1/14/2010 05:53PM PST

This looks like it might be a nice little utility, however, upon running it, the test patterns do not match what is shown in the instructions. On the first adjustment, instead of the pattern I'm prepared for, I get two vertical bars, one above the other, that travel back and forth, right to left. Also, the slider on the right side seems to have no effect whatsoever. I'm running this on a MacBook Pro 17-inch wide glossy display, so I don't know if it's an issue with a MacBook or not.

What an excellent piece of calibration software. What a shame the developer hasn't updated it for Leopard. I wonder if he/shi is still around and could be persuaded to update thei EXCELLENT application?
