X Font Info CommentaryFunctional, but obsolete at best - Version: 1.1b1, 6/15/2007 06:37PM PST

Found "X Font Info" while searching for a program in which I can view uninstalled fonts -- without bringing my system to a screeching halt on log-in, as with Suitcase.

Technically, this program lets you do that -- but only in the same sense as Apple Font Book lets you do it. You open a font, look at it, decide whether to install it. Thanks, but I'll just use Font Book for that.

I was hoping for something LIKE Suitcase (or Linotype "Font Explorer" -- also good), that lets me easily view all the fonts I have (without installing them) but that I could run only when I need to -- and keep the VAST majority of my fonts un-installed.

Oh well. It appears to be old (2002) and is probably no longer even supported, in any case.

X Font Info Troubleshooting ReportPlus and minuses - Version: 1.1b1, 12/27/2005 09:22AM PST

This hasn't been updated in a couple of years and there are no instructions but it still works fine on my Dual 2.3 PPC G5 with Tiger 10.4.3. There are some limitations to be aware of however:

X Font does NOT recognize Postscript/Printer fonts (LWFN) and it will beep and do nothing if you try. It WILL recognize TrueType (Mac and Windows), Screen Fonts (FFIL) and OpenType (OTF).

X Font could use an upgrade to include preferences like adjusting the default character appearance (it is set at "ABC...123..") since most graphic and web artists will find this app useful. Plus a way to view the complete character map would be welcome. But this is free from the developer and it fits an important niche for those of us who have a plethora of fonts.

I get the same problem. When I drag anythign on to it I only get a beep. In other words, this isn't working for me at all.

too bad, I could really use an app that does what this one is trying to do.

open fonts on Zip disks. Once the fonts are dragged over to the HD, the viewer works like a charm. It would be very handy if fonts on removable disks could be opened (I keep a lot of my collection archived that way).

File Inspector (now in Finder called "Get Info Panel") had an API which would allow developers to create plug-ins, such that if one selected preview, theoretically for any file type there could be a valid, useful preview function, if a proper plug-in was installed. What would be cool is to do exactly that: extend the Get Info panel, such that hitting preview would show the font, rather than having to use a separate app for that... Don't know if the wonderful step-backwards, all-Carbon-instead-of-Cocoa Finder-not-Workspace has such a feature, or if we have to wait for another five years for Apple to reinvent what NeXTSTEP had about a decade ago... Alternatively, maybe this would be possible with Unsanity's APEs..

"Drag and Drop"method, I suggest this one: Select a font file, then "Show Info" from the File menu , then "Open with application", then choose X Font Info, finally click on "Change All". Now, each time you double-click on a font file, X Font Info's window will open. Be aware that you will have to repeat this process for each type of font extension (.suit, .ttf, ...) you have on your HD.

virtualshift: "Only one font at a time is no good" You're wrong: drag and drop several fonts, it will open them all.
