  • changed the way the message window status bar appears, and disappears on the user.. hopefully more useful now :)

  • neat (and good!) new stuff added to "New Status" window. Try apple option S, it's faster, better... stronger
  • serious revamp of View menu
  • added the ability to set a background image for the contact list (yay!) It will slow down contact list rendering right now, not terribly, but I'm working on it :)
  • added ability to move the status images and service images left and right in the basic list
  • added view menu toggle for typing in contact list
  • changed the way show/hide items work, they use Checks, rather than changing titles all the time
  • fixed: using contact nicknames as status messages wasn't using the identifier, when it should
  • Proteus menu "Set Status" now (finally) has "New Status" option
  • trimmed the fat from a couple preference panes

Proteus ReviewDisappointing--cannot find "join group chat" for jabber - Version: 4.16, 1/4/2008 08:32AM PST

I have used Adium for over a year along with others in my policy group as a secondary communication channel during group teleconferences. My primary, and really only, use, therefore, is a group chat at a password-protected jabber conferencing site. I searched and searched the menus of Proteus, but I could not discover how to join a group chat room. I can do it easily with Adium and with Pidgin on my new ASUS Eee PC (Xandros Linux based). So, for me, Proteus is useless, as is Psi, because the latter does not support passworded logging into chat rooms.

Also, when I tried to set up my jabber account with Proteus, I kept failing until finally I noticed that it was necessary to open another tab to enter the host name for my account. I had thought that it was implicit in my account name (user@host).

Bottom line: Adium is still my chat client of choice for MacOS

Proteus Reviewwhy all this criticizing about updates? - Version: 4.16, 1/2/2008 05:06AM PST

I don't understand why everybody is criticizing about Proteus updates. I use updates for centuries and never had a problem. I tried Audium etc but i like Proteus the most.
I hate when there are numerous and meaningless updates for apps.

Proteus is always my choice and never liked other apps (maybe only for the look).
The only issue was "joining" conversations with multiple persons but I was ok.

I hope these guys continue updating whenever they really have something to offer and not just to "remind" us that they are "alive".

Proteus CommentaryDollar Short and a Few Years Late - Version: 4.16, 1/1/2008 07:58PM PST

Sorry, but this group promised the world and delivered zero. The time lapse between this release and the previous, place it dead last. Adium rules this world as well it should for its constant revisions and added feature sets.

I was a licensed user of Proteus, and it was once one of the better ones, but those days are long gone.
