A useful utility

I am surprised this does get a higher rating. I find it useful to be able to delete the trash on my USB drive without also emptying the trash on my hard drive. It is also useful to be be able to immediately delete some files again without emptying the full trash. Emptying trash can be dangerous and I like the extra control and flexibility Trsh X gives.

In Panther Under 'Finder' you will find 'Secure Empty Trash'

I find this app a little slow but handy at times. I am not sure how secure it is for shredding so I use shredit to shred files and wipe free space.

Does it
a) also shred the filenames in the directory or just the file contents?
b) comply with the Gutmann standard?
(see http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/secure_del.html)
Is it supposed to stand up to
c) forensic testing, or
d) just Norton's Unerase?

While I move/delete most trash from keyboard (and am glad to see the old trash can gone from the days of System 1.0/Finder 1.0...a time when the two numbers often differed) this thing I perch in the menu window bar. Sometimes it's handy. Having no complaints, and having had it for a year (?) or more, will rate it 5 stars. I suppose the "secure erase" feature might be of some value but I'd rather do that with other software.

I have now been using this package for some time. The Dock Trash Can is OK but Trash X placing it on the desktop is familiar and comforting . For those of us who came up through 6-7-8-9 old habits die hard.
I second Mackidockie…

10, 2003, this application isn't working. It needs to be updated for Jaguar (10.2.5). When it does work, it works as advertised.
I am passing on this version and sticking with v1.7.8, which has been reliable.
As usual, this application is slowwwwwwwwwwwww. The effectiveness of its 'secure delete' feature remains unclear.
