SilverFast Ai (Umax) Astra 6400 CommentaryDon't Blame LaserSoft for UMAX's Lack of Support - Version: 6.0.1d32, 5/3/2006 01:58PM PST

LaserSoft is NOT part of UMAX. And while I concur that UMAX's lack of post-sale support of their product for Mac OS X absolutely STINKS, that's not LaserSoft's issue.

One comment regarding LaserSoft: their upgrade policy does leave something to be desired. They want US$99.00 to upgrade from Silverfast SE for UMAX Astra 6400. Since they charge US$119.00 for a new install, that's very expensive. Especially when you consider I paid US$49.00 originally, plus US$20.00 to update the SE version a while ago. US$168.00 seems out of line to me. (I think they should charge about US$50.00 and certainly no more than US$75.00. But that's not their policy.)

small claims lawsuit today against UMAX because of their refusal to continue to support their "Mac-compatible" scanners. All affected UMAX scanner owners should do this. Mac users shouldn't buy products from this company and PC users should be wary about this company's poor attitude toward new operating systems.

has categorically stated that they will NOT be providing any support whatsoever under OS X for their prior OS scanners. No drivers, nothing! I have written to their president, their legal department, and to other departments without getting any response. My local MAC dealer terminated their relationship with UMAX because of their dirty tricks to get us to buy more scanners. Apple also terminated their relationship according to my dealer. I just found out my father's company also has had unresolved problems with UMAX. This company is not deserving of anyone's business. Forget UMAX!
