Product Description:

WEP Key Maker generates a hexadecimal WEP key from a pass phrase. IEEE 802.11b (aka Airport, Wi-Fi) uses a 104- or 40-bit (aka 128- and 64-bit) key to encode packets with WEP encryption. Third party devices typically use a hexadecimal key, which WEP Key Maker helps create. Generating such a key from a pass phrase makes it easy to create and reproduce a key without writing it down. The key can be copied from WEP Key Maker’s dialog and pasted directly into Airport dialogs and third-party software. WEP Key Maker also creates keys of other lengths.

WEP Key Maker ReviewThanks to this… - Version: 1.0.3, 1/16/2002 08:52PM PST

program, I wasted 4 days of my life trying to solve an internet connectivity problem. I used it to translate the password for the network, in order to be used on a pc with a linksys usb wireless modem connecting to an Apple Base Station. Finally, after several authentication problems, I got to thinking maybe the translation was incorrect--even though I more than triple checked it. I finally booted into OS 9, using the Airport Admin Utility 1.3.1 [which is VASTLY superior to the 2.0 version, which Stupidly and Irresponsibly leaves out the hexadecimal translation option] and the Admin Utility generated a completely different password. Which now worked. For others in this situation, it was also required to set the IP address and subnet mask on the pc manually rather than using the Base Station DHCP server, even though the automatic setting worked fine on the Macs.

your WEP password with a '$' , the Mac will transmit the password as Hexidecimal. If you do that, is this program necessary?
