BroadbandOptimizer Usage TipExcellent for LAN connections - Version: 1.5, 9/1/2006 08:13PM PST

Broadband Optimizer is not so much for increasing speed on internet connections -- frankly, internet connections are, by nature, much slower than local area networks (LANs). Broadband Optimizer helps IMMENSELY with LAN connections such as copying large files across your own internal network between two computers. Transfer speeds between my PC and Mac increased from about 2MB/s to over 9MB/s with this tool installed (I only have a 100Mbps network, not gigabit). NOTE: On a larger network, this can cause problems by increasing communications between PCs even when they're not doing much, so I recommend using it only on small LANs (5 or fewer computers).

BroadbandOptimizer ReviewCrippled my system - Version: 1.5, 12/28/2005 09:12AM PST

Went from 4Mbps to 300kbps on Adelphia cable after installing this. Not good at all. Tried uninstalling, but evidently there is something left behind, as I now only get 2Mbps

BroadbandOptimizer CommentaryNo speed difference. - Version: 1.5, 11/29/2005 06:52AM PST

Absolutely no difference in download time. Not even 1 second faster. We're on cable modem here (comcast). We tested the download speeds of several large files here at VersionTracker, recorded their times (down to the exact second). We then installed BroadbandOptimizer, rebuilding permissions, restarting, and verifying its correct installment via the Terminal (all steps outlined in the short but clear manual). We then downloaded each of these 4 large files again, and there wasn't any difference in speed.

We removed this product and that's the end of the story.

BroadbandOptimizer CommentaryApple Broadband Tuner - Version: 1.5, 11/28/2005 03:36PM PST

Does anyone know if this program offers any advantages over Apple Broadband Tuner 1.0 which claims to make similar adjustments? Interesting enough, Apple's program comes in a 192 KB .dmg file, while this program is barely 7K in size.

BroadbandOptimizer CommentaryNot useful if ISP already throttles your speed? - Version: 1.5, 9/20/2005 07:37AM PST

My ISP tells me that it will let me have a max of 80 kB/s (640 kb/s) download speed for the kind of subscription I have. Before installing BroadbandOptimizer - Mac OS X 1.5 (BO) I consistently got 72-76 kB/s. After installation I consistently got 72-76 kB/s. Stupid me. Only then did I start thinking. If my ISP throttles my down speed to 80 kB/s, how can I profit from BO? Result: I can't say whether BO IS useful.

BroadbandOptimizer CommentaryBO vs. NetSpeedx2 - Version: 1.5, 6/1/2005 10:27AM PST

Contained within another application called Maintain1 is a bash script called netspeedx2, which modifies and increases the values of even more settings than BO does. Has anyone tried that and compared the results to BO? Here are the values netspeedx2 sets:

sudo sysctl -w kern.ipc.somaxconn=512
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.newreno=1
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.mssdflt=1460
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.rfc1323=0
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.sendspace=65536
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.recvspace=98304
sudo sysctl -w kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=524288
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.udp.recvspace=84160
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.udp.maxdgram=57344
sudo sysctl -w net.local.stream.recvspace=98304
sudo sysctl -w net.local.stream.sendspace=65535

For comparison, BO sets these values:

sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.sendspace=65536
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.recvspace=65536
sudo sysctl -w kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=524288
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.udp.recvspace=73728

If you already have Maintain1 installed and your default shell is bash, you can run the netspeedx2 script directly in Terminal like this:

sudo '/Applications/maintain.app/Contents/Resources/netspeedx2'

or

sudo '/Applications/Utilities/maintain.app/Contents/Resources/netspeedx2'

The settings clear after you reboot of course, but if they work well, it would be easy to modify BO to load them at startup.

BroadbandOptimizer ReviewFantastic App! - Version: 1.5, 5/27/2005 06:44AM PST

I love apps that are monkey simple, do one thing really, really well, and work without any effort of fuss. I tested my connect speeds at work and at home at Internetfrog.com both before and after. My download speeds easily doubled at work from 859k on a DSL to 1.5Mb and at home from 750k on a cable modem/airport to 3Mb depending on where I am in the house. Even if I am in the most remote part of the house relative to the airport my min. connect is 1Mb after installing the app. This thing works great!!! Most appreciated and makes my surfing and email a much more pleasant experience--more usable too. The upload speeds didn't change too much, but that may be more the service providers than the system itself. Will definately send the developer $5 for the improvements which were stark in a before and after comparison.

Intrigued to search out the developer's site—to learn more about BroadbandOptimizer—I seemed to quickly develop a headache. Seems the redirect deposited one's cursor within a totally black background field, with an errily-green "typewriter" font to squint over. If it's some too, way-cool version of a neo-minimalist design credo...hurl-away

BroadbandOptimizer ReviewWorks well with Firefox and OSX 1.4 - Version: 1.5, 5/11/2005 06:02PM PST

This little program more than doubled my download speed using firefox (6800 kilobits per second to 16000 kilobits per second), but had no discernable effect at all when using Safari (which remained at 6800 kilobits per second). I measured using several download meters over several days and receieved roughly the same results pretty consistently.

All I can say is thanks- I love it when its faster to download a 20mb file than it is to run it through stuffit expander!
