IBM ViaVoice ReviewThe soft where is bear lee use a bull. - Version: 3.0.2, 7/20/2006 04:18PM PST

The title of this review is how your document will read if recorded by ViaVoice (The software is barely usable). And after just reading a review of Nuance's latest version of NaturallySpeaking, now at version 9, and how it requires no training with 99% accuracy, I went to their website to see if they had a Mac version. They do, but it's STILL this garbage, which I had bought when it first came out, upgraded it to this version, and found it completely inaccurate (why Nuance is still selling this on their website is beyond me).

After a few months, I uninstalled it and haven't looked back. I've only looked longingly at what XPers can use. Of course you can use NatSpeak 9 on an newest intel Macs (with Apple's Boot Camp utility, a copy of Windows XP, a U.S.B. adapter on your headset, and the annoying chore of having to start up in Windows each time you want to use it), but if you're like me and waiting for the intel PRO desktops, you're out of luck. If you call that lucky. Haven't tried iListen yet, but I would really like just 1 Mac-only app like NatSpeak to work right out of the box. No training involved.

The following comments were provided by a Nuance Rep

Thanks for contacting Nuance.

The current version of IBM ViaVoice MacOS X is only supported as high as 10.2 on the Mac operating system. At this time there is no current plan I'm aware of for a new immediate release that will support the new operating system. For any additional information you can contact us at 800-654-1187.

Looking for a product to help a student that has poor fine motor control and has trouble writing or typing. Can't even try this one.

IBM ViaVoice ReviewVia Voice does not work on anything past X.3.6! - Version: 3.0.2, 12/22/2005 05:35PM PST

I have had Via Voice since OS 9 - which worked tolerably well. There are no other major developers for Mac - the last one was acquired by Dragon years ago and they deliberately killed it!

Scansoft now administers it for IBM, and their customer service rep says there is not even a time frame for development of this product. That stinks. Every time I get a copy of this product (the ONLY one that will run on Mac), you upgrade the OS and it will not run lower versions. That stinks as well.

I have been effectively unable to run this program for over three years! The last supported version was X.3.6, but that didn't even work well. I ended up sending it back.

Once a leader in the field of voice recognition, Apple has let development stall by developing rapid upgrades to the OS that will is not downward compatible with third party software.

The best system (Dragon) is only for Windows.

This is not the first time I have had this issue with upgrades and downward compatibility. If they don't get this solved soon, I will stop buying upgrades!

In addition, it has cost Apple supporters (some formerly quite loyal!) and developers, which in turn costs it new customers, since there are more programs for Windows.

Apple is and remains the best in many respects, but had better get off their butts in this regard, or continue to lose market share.

IBM ViaVoice CommentaryI should have known better... - Version: 3.0, 12/8/2005 02:58AM PST

I recently downloaded ViaVoice 3.0 and from the moment I mounted the disc image I knew I was in trouble.
Not only won't the software install properly which was bad enough, but to make matters worse the Installer Application Folder is locked and I can't even get the satisfaction of deleting the program from my computer...
IBM, what was I thinking....
If anyone out there has some troubleshoot tips on how I can cleanse my hard drive of this thorn I'd be grateful for your help...
Thanks...

I have used Viavoice for Mac for several years, first with OS9 and for a couple years for OSX. Because I took the time to train it well it worked pretty good.

Version 9 would actually obey the "capitalize" command (never worked in OSX). I use it to summarize hundreds, sometimes thousands of pages of trial court transcripts. It was quirky, sometimes quitting unexpectedly, but over all typed the write word more than 80% of the time.

That is until Panther came along. I will download this update to see if Viavoice stays. IBM / Scansoft seem to have no committment to this product.

IBM ViaVoice Reviewwarning do not buy! - Version: 3.0.2, 2/11/2005 02:00PM PST

Big warning: this product has very very poor support from scan soft (sh*t soft?), with no hope of ever been updated again as IBM have abandoned and sold ViaVoice to scan soft and that company has no interest in ViaVoice or the Mac for that matter! I won't even get started on the number of bugs ViaVoice has...

However all is not lost if you want or need voice recognition on the Macintosh that works and is continuously updated iListen from macspeech.com is the answer. Very competent piece of software that I find easy and relatively accurate in its usage.

James.

I have Viavoice millenium edition running perfectly and was very happy with it until about 8 months ago when i did my usual OS update from 10.2. to 10.2.3 (i think)
Since then.... NOTHING.!!! the program initialises but does not get past the startup screen EVER!!! IBM has NOTHING on there site about this and no one seem to know if it is ever likely to be resolved.
I'm at OS 10.2.8 now and, when it becomes available, will jump straight to OS 10.4 Tiger. Is there a chance i will ever have viavoice operative again or should i just slowly pass the box and the CD through my shredder??? the latter looks more likely everyday...
If you're thinking of buying viavoice for your mac i have an alternative solution... book yourself into a lunatic asylum and throw custurd at a blackboard... the results will be far more useful than anything you'll obtain from trying Viavoice's OSX version.
BE WARNED!!!

IBM ViaVoice CommentaryCan anyone help with ViaVoice?? - Version: 3.0.2, 12/1/2004 08:31PM PST

Either this is the worst program I've ever purchased, or I'm missing something...or both. No problem installing the program, no problem dictating (blazing fast), but when I paused the microphone, the spinning beach ball of death appears and doesn't let go.

I'm running 10.3.4 on a dual 450. I did download the update...but am not sure if the update applies to OS after 10.2.6, or just, as stated in the Scansoft site, 10.2.2-10.2.6.

Do I need to uninstall and re-install the program and update? Do I need to do something else? Or, with zero support, is this just about the worst thing IBM has created?
