Hmm, yes this is a well-coded piece of OSXware, but I cannot agree with the happyness around.

Unicodechecker will only check STRINGS. I.e. it is helpful when you need to look up a value for a certain character or so - that is great but I personally would prefer this functionality more integrated in other programs or OSX itself, not in a seperated GUI.

However, what I desperately lack here is a conversion for FILES. UChecker is the most intelligent software I know when it comes to knowing how to convert, but it can't convert...

OKee, I'll search on for something that can change UTF-16 -> UTF-8 without garbling the special characters that happen to have a different encoding but do exist for both file types.

From detailed code point info to conversion to HTML, this gem has it all, in package better designed than many a shareware application. Wish there were more like it...

This is a wonderful utility and should be on the Mac of anyone who uses Unicode. It's also an excellent model of how to write a Mac OS X application, having all the bells and whistles a good Mac application should have.

Simply best utility of its kind, and one of the cases when I praise myself to be mac -user over the last decade or so. Could you name a Win or Lin utility similar to this one?

It managed to decipher couple of unicode mails I had in Eudora mailbox. I didn't want to give up Eudora for couple of mails, it did work as advertised.

Get it, keep it and if you use it (which I bet in some occasion), donate it.

I pretty much use this app for one thing only, but that one thing is so utterly indespensible that it'd be worth money if it weren't generously free:

Converting non-English text to HTML entities via the services menu.

When inserting small blocks of Japanese characters into English web pages, being able to select the text in TextWrangler and just select convert from the Services menu has saved me so much time I don't even want to think about it. It even provides a nice little transparent overlay telling you what it's just done.

The wide variety of other features I've poked at on occasion, and the spotlight integration is cool, but basically this app provides the most valuable Service on my computer, and has never caused an issue or not functioned as expected (even version 1.6 at the time Tiger shipped worked perfectly with it).

UnicodeChecker CommentaryTroubles in Services-Land - Version: 1.8, 7/23/2005 09:16AM PST

I've had the pleasure of using this application for quite a while and up until my conversion to 10.4 with a new machine it was "the bee's knees" and better than the "cat's pajamas".

My trouble started with a new machine with a fresh copy of 10.4.2, I installed the OS and then the UnicodeChecker app (v1.8) and for some reason the Unicode menu won't appear under the Services > dropdown menu. So, all of the text that I am trying to convert on WWW sites that don't handle the Unicode conversions won't convert nicely.

If someone has a work-around that would be cool ... but for now .. 10.4 isn't playing nicely with the UnicodeChecker v 1.8.
