How do you know if you need this update? My router has all sorts of numbers on it. Which is what?

Updated the firmware in my ver 2 router in 45 seconds using Safari on OS 10.3.4. This hardware is rock solid.
A little weird...but worked...

Tried the new way, where you can upgrade the firmware via the browser...and that didn't work with Netscape 7 nor IE 5. Went back to the ole'TFTP way and it went off first try. As per usual, the new firmware seems even better than the last. More power to Linksys for continously supporting their products!

I have 2 units, one the BEFW11S4 and then the 802.11g model, and both are a picture of stability, and worth. I can't remember a time that I have been dissappointed in their support, ease of use, or overall value. Would buy more, and I have for clients as this is the only thing that I recommend. I like the idea that it is actually a Cisco unit.

You can tell be the list of the bugs fixed that this update has been long overdue.
The upgrade process was painless....even over wireless.
Still I may upgrade to the WRT54G. Even though my network is 802.11b the stuff this linux based router does is impressive! For doing this linksys, I will bump your score up by two stars!
Check out what the WRT54G can do!

This was a router was a mistake. 4 different version of it and you do not know which version you will get when ordering online. Add to the fact that the firmware is never updated and I will not be purchasing a Linksys next time around.
The router does work....unless you use 128bit WEP and an airport card!

CVASchmidt, I'm not sure if your post was in jest, or not! Either way, I'll use it as starting point: If you are as unfamiliar with phrases like "empty string" and "cd to the directory" as I am, but you want to update your router to its latest firmware, don't waste time trying to decipher the Install Notes in this downloaded folder. I did, and spent 2 hours trying to get this firmware to stick (I got the repeating progress bar that would go up to half way and then start over again; the notes said "only for Model No. BEFW11S4 ver.2/3/3.2!" when mine only said "version 2", etc.). FINALLY I saw that good ol' VersionTracker had placed an "Editor's Notes" link at the top of this page, with instructions. So, if you want to update your router, go to http://www.mactechnologies.com/pages/tftpinst.html#linksys and they'll explain exactly what you need to do in layman's terms. It only takes about 3 minutes.
To Linksys: shame on you for not taking the time to explain how to intall this update for those of us who don't know what FTP even means. Please look at the phrasing that Mactechnologies.com actually used on their help page. THAT's how instructions look.

install with Mac OS X. Using Explorer, set the router's password to the empty string. In Terminal, cd to the directory where you put the new Linksys code.bin. Use the tftp program to open a connection to the router, e.g. "tftp 192.168.0.1". Type 'binary' in tftp, and then "put code.bin" in tftp. 30 seconds later, the router will reboot. Quit tftp (with 'quit'). Set your password back again in Explorer.
I've succesfully applied the update yesterday, and at the same time, have switched my Internet access from cable to DSL (640 Kb/sec vs. 5 Mb/sec!!).
Today, I find myself unable to transfer files using MSN Messenger 4.0.
I'm on MacOS X v10.3.4 and everything else works fine otherwise. Does anybody experience the same issue with this router (BEFSW11s4 v2) and this firmware update?
Thanks,
K.
