Melodyne CommentaryWorth every penny if you're a vocalist, or producer/record them - Version: 3.2.2, 3/14/2009 02:57PM PST

Superstitious
Yes, this software is really expensive. Unfortunately for the developers, tons of people pirate it, using the expense to justify that. It's circular. The fewer people buy it, the more the high price is justified in the eyes of the developers.

But, we're talking about their top tier app, here. There are less expensive less feature-rich versions of Melodyne available, like Melodyne UNO. If you have another multi-track program and just want to polish a vocal track, consider that one. There is also a plug-in.

Adobe Creative Suite is really expensive. Office is really expensive. Frankly, I think Melodyne is a much better value than Microsoft Office, and how many more people buy that?

This software's most impressive feature is how well it adjusts defects in vocal takes without sounding artificial. It can save a lot of studio time and studio time is expensive. If you're on a limited budget like I am, you can do a lot more songs because you don't have to do so many takes of each one.

One thing that I'm unhappy about, though, is that the Spitfish plug-in doesn't work in this version. It did work in 3.0.1.5. The audio units version of the plug-ins isn't seen at all, and the VST versions no longer work.

The price is prohibitive to even wanting to try it out. I think I'll stick to my ProTools. Thank you!

I already have ALL the great sound edit apps. I think I'll pass on this and buy a new computer instead.

...can an application be to be sold for 1,000 bucks? A time-limited demo version would perhaps help people to justify such an investment.

the only software that allows such ... possibilities. Celemony knows that, so, they ask a price for that... And I don't agree. That means only middle to high level pro studios can buy it. If one day, I'm one of these, I'll surely buy Melodyne than any PC or Mac with Acid !!!! (This argument was just dumb !?!) --- Until that... I'm sure you guessed what. Krr

the term "sound sculpting" to describe the processes involved with producing music on computers. Melodyne allows one do this almost literally, with a level of comfort and control that is unprecendented. This upgrade addresses all the criticisms I've read here so far. There is now a significantly cheaper version for project studios. (CRE8); so Melodyne is affordable too.

the least of it. That guy should have his privs revoked. The program is like magic. An exceptional piece of art. "If you have the means, I highly recommend it. It is so choice."

Mikis--2008
Reviews:       Mikis Nov 4, 2001   Demo 1.01 review: a 3 for the effort and great performance once you've managed to get the files detected inside the app. The problem is getting the files detected so that you can do any kind of treatment on them. I tried both on OS X 10.1 and OS 9.2.1 and couldn't get more than one file detected. When I tried a long 4 minute sample the detection stopped midway every time, just before the "Hz". When tracks were finished they did take at least 30 minues for say 3 minutes on a 300 mhz G3. Basically this kind of loooong prework time on 4 minute samples is not acceptable in a $995 product. Sorry! I also found it difficult to move the track content around. No obvious way to start the second track 2 minutes in the first track. Why isn't there a manual with the demo? This is revolutionizing software, at least on the Mac, but Celemony should try to please us by:
improve track detection time (could be done by Predetecting tracks while playing them), better response time in GUI, A PDF Manual!, A full working 30 day Demo, maybe limited in time to 30 minutes max length finished productions
before I sink $995 (!) into this piece of software. For this kind of money I could get a PC with Acid, which may not be able to do everything Melodyne does but enough to warrant the price, which Melodyne doesn't.
Get Real, Celemony!
