Virex 7 DAT Commentaryprotection for what? - Version: 7080917, 9/21/2008 09:19AM PST

If someone feels to be threatened by viruses,
he should use a virus protection for sure.

I am not. And I don't feel I have to do a job
that those windows users should do for their own safety.

So no protection against a non existing danger for me.

Windows is DOS and was warmly welcomed into the personal computer age. Bad people was able to figure out ways to corrupt Windows because there were more of those program based computers compared to Apple Mac at 10% of the market. We didn't get picked on a heck of a lot - but Mac has become compatible and having to run DOS apps brings those possible nasties into our camp. OS X? I don't know if it's been a good thing. Things were way more better back in the OS 9 days. All Apple is doing is becoming more in tune with the electronic application of the way things are now and the bad guys are noticing. Especially now that Macs have gone Intel... These viral updates are actually needed for any help with this considered good and is better than none at all.

Virex 7 DAT CommentaryIf you really Want a virus checker. - Version: 7080723, 7/26/2008 06:14AM PST

If you really WANT a virus checker you should switch to Windows. I haven't used one for years and have never had a hint of a virus. MacOSX has not had a virus in the wild yet, so don't bog your Mac down with Dis or DAT.

I think if Mac users actually needed a decent virus checking program we would have one.....we don't. The only thing that comes close is ClamAVX. When I upgraded my eMac to tiger I thought I would not be able to use it as it was slow as a kid on the short yellow school bus.

I found that Virex was eating most of my cycles. Once removed, my eMac running Tiger was as fast as it was running Panther. I had hoped that when it was renamed McAfee that it would run better. Alas that is all that happened, it was just renamed. My computer screeched to a halt once it was installed.

I have only run into one Mac virus in my life and that was on OS 5 and it was a lame virus that did no harm.

Demand something decent if you want AV for Mac.

I got rid of Norton because it was screwed up, then Virex 7.7 cause it was screwed up, then VirusScan 8.5 because it was screwed up and bogging down my computer. Sure it kept me safe, but at what cost. Now I just use the Freeware app ClamXav.

This update worked fine for me. I did't know where to get the virus definitions to update 7.2 and was glad when I saw it on Version tracker. I downloaded it without any problem, and it installed with out any problem and updated my Virex.

Virex 7 DAT Usage TipVirex Scanning Engine Updated - Version: 070131, 2/2/2007 09:01AM PST

FYI: McAfee updated the virus scanning engine from 4400 to 5100 in DAT V7061115 (and newer). It seems to work fine for me.

I thought I'd give them a little pat on the back, since we mostly just rag on them here for their poor Mac consumer support.
