Product Description:

HexEditor is a Mac OS X application that allows viewing/manipulating raw data inside files. It can show data using various encodings as integers (hex or decimal), floating points, binary, character strings... It now allows searching for hex/ascii strings

What's new in this version:

Added field disclosure to allow better screen usage
Added preferences panel, uppercase/lower case hex, work on copy, allowing editing by default.
Corrected problem that made it not possible to open multiple special files simultaneously

According to the read me, an explict save is unecessary because the program saves changes on the fly. This is fortunate because neither the Save nor the Save As functions work at all. Unfortunately, the "save on the fly" doesn't work either.
I never used the program back in the day, so maybe back then it deserved its high rating; but these days it just a waste of bits.

Whenever I try to save a file or even save-as a different filename, it says it can't do it. With no explaination.

It's quite good, as for the saving bugs, it still saves the file. Just make sure you push Enter after every change, then Save, it'll say it can't save, but it has.
I use this program for Halo modding, it works very well.
