Although still in early Alpha/Beta stage, it works to change the Al PB's extra Enter key to an option key, makes the Caps Lock key on internal and external attached keyboards into a Control key, and makes the right Control key on external keyboards into a Command key. Installed it yesterday and it works flawlessly. Find it here

uControl Usage TipChange Enter key with a hack - Version: 1.4.6, 5/29/2005 12:52PM PST

Try a hack to change the Enter key at http://www.snark.de/index.cgi/0007. It worked on my Titanium PowerBook G4 after I ran Repair Privileges, but as Shane notes, this tip works for ADB internal keyboard on older PowerBooks, but will probably not work for newer USB-based internal keyboards on PowerBooks and iBooks.

If you follow Heiko's steps at that link, you MAY still need to run Disk Utility and run Repair Privileges to get it to load.

I am Very Happy Now. That was one of the last Tiger-related fixes I've been waiting for to get my machine to feel like home again after the 10.4 upgrade.

MANY MANY MANY thanks to Shane at gnufoo.org for maintaining uControl for several years(?) and to Heiko at snark.de for the handy tip linked above.

Uh oh, I switched to Tiger (which is a good thing) but now uControl doesn't work (which is a /very/ bad thing).

uControl ReviewExcellent tool, not compatible with Tiger - Version: 1.4.6, 4/29/2005 11:30AM PST

My setup in my office is my PB 15 on a pedestal with external mouse and keyboard. I use a Microsoft Natural keyboard because the shape is good for my wrists. uControl lets me swap option and command on only the Windows keyboard without changing the PB keyboard.

Perfect.

The only problem is that it does not appear to be compatible with Tiger: the extension won't load. I'm really dependent on uControl now, and am hoping there is an update very soon!!!

uControl ReviewHandy tool, but some problems... - Version: 1.4.6, 4/21/2005 08:09AM PST

This is a handy tool for remapping certain keys. I have an ergonomic split keyboard, but it was designed for Windows use, not Mac. Therefore, the positions of the control, alt, and windows keys (control, option, and command on the Mac) needed to be remapped.

The tool performs as advertised with two caveats. Every time I log in or restart the computer, the key mapping doesn't take effect until I open up the ucontrol control panel. So I've added ucontrol to my login items to make the process more automatic.

Second, I had some issues remapping the caps lock key to perform as a control key. This worked fine in previous versions of ucontrol, but in this version the GUI wouldn't allow me to do the mapping. I ended up having to open up the prefs file for ucontrol and mess around with it until I got something which worked.

I'd appreciate it if the developer(s) could fix a few of these issues.

By the way - anyone have luck using it with 10.3.9? I'm still on 10.3.8 because the last OS update broke ucontrol for a while...

uControl ReviewThe best Utility to Use both Powerbook and Desktop Keyboard - Version: 1.4.6, 2/26/2005 10:57PM PST

This is THE tool if you use Powerbook on the road, AND attach a Logitech or Microsoft Keyboard to Powerbook elsewhere. uControl allows multiple keyboard profiles (unlike DoubleCommand), thus the switch is samless. As much as I like DoubleCommand (which I use on Mac Desktop) for its ability to distinguish left and right Command Keys (uControl can't), I stick with uControl.

Use it since Panther came it and it is rock solid after 10.3.8 upgrade.

uControl rocks. I am crippled without it. This is one of the best add-ons for OS X that anyone has ever done.

One of the things I've truly missed since getting a PowerBook is a scroll wheel. Now I have one. Also, I don't know how many times that "enter" key next to my space bar has caused me problems because of Fat Finger disease. Now it's a second "command" key instead.

Software installed without a hitch, and runs splendidly even on my XPostFacto'd Wallstreet. Highly recommended.

A very useful helper, I can use my mutilated cheapo windows keyboard without having the /⌘ and Control keys the wrong way around. It's free and it seems to be very reliable, good work folks! My only gripe (I'm human)....... I wish it kept the previous settings when you upgrade, uninstalling the earlier verison seems to bin the preferences too.
