Great little program!

I have used DiskTracker for years now. It is simple, easy to use and, until recently, was pretty much bullet proof. Snow Leopard threw in some unexpected kinks, but the developer was very responsive to inquiry, got right on it, and we're now back in business. I don't agree with the previous reviewer that the interface needs to become more glitzy. When something works so well for the purpose intended and doesn't require an extensive manual to figure it out, why mess with it? Highly recommended.
This is broken

Flaky for me under Os 10.5.2 on an Intel iMac... Some disk records disappear from list view and only show up if I reinsert the disk and update the record. Stated volume and directory sizes are also unreliable, eg a 5GB folder shows up as 1GB. Meanwhile, I have none of these problems in version 2.3 on a G4 PowerBook running Os 10.4.11. This is hardly progress.
When are they going to update the ancient UI? - Version: 2.4b6, 1/26/2008 12:00AM PST

I love this program for its simplicity and speed, have used it for years now, but when...GOD WHEN...are they going to upgrade the UI to current Mac standards? I appreciate the beta updates, for stability, but I'm really really REALLY tired of the crunchy "classic" font display and lack of icons. Even their website looks like it stopped somewhere in 1998. Hopefully there's a version 3 in the works?
Doesn't open in Panther - Version: 2.4b5, 12/12/2007 11:09AM PST

The latest version doesn't launch in Panther (10.3.9). It has no problem in Tiger, however, the computer we do our archiving on needs Panther on it. Maybe later we'll give this a shot.
Very fast and easy even with huge amount of data

I own a recording studio using Pro Tools HD for music recording and production. I have about 5 years worth of session file backup discs of clients music taking up over 550 (4.2GB) DVD-R discs. I had a fear of the program getting sluggish with more and more being added each month, but it hasn't. Even on my old 1GHz powerbook the file opens up quick and searches are surprisingly fast.
I would highly recommend this app to anyone who needs to catalog the contents of any media for offline searching. This was the best $30 I ever spent.

Disktracker rocks, even on Intel

Disktracker is my mainstay, and has been for many years. When I switched to Intel Macs, I was worried that it wouldn't work, since there is no Universal Binary. Turns out it works just as fast in Rosetta as it did before. It just scanned 127.4 GB of data on an external Firewire drive in the time it took to write this review. Actually less, since it's done, and I'm still writing. Maybe it would be nice if it grabbed the icons, so I can search visually, but pretty much 100% of my searches for a file are the sort where I type in a file name, or one nearby, and it takes me to the file I want. When you're cataloguing or looking things up, speed is what you want, and DiskTracker is the king of speed. Don't be put off by lack of UB. It runs as if it's native, thanks to Rosetta in OSX on Intel machines. This is great software, the way Mac software used to be. Not much eye-candy, but it's Fast and Furious. Accurate. Easy to use. Easy to use. (Oh, did I already say that? I mean... it's easy to use) ;^)
I've checked a lot of others over the years, and some are prettier, but none compare to DiskTracker in performance, IMO.

How does this app stack up against that new "DiskLibrary" app? Does DL import/read DT catalogues? Since I'm really fed up with the way DT never really gets updated (network issues, no spotlight support, OS 7.5 GUI, no UB etc.) - I'm just curious if someone compared the two apps. /tia

Touvaly is sold for $20, just for creating some aliases on the HD !
Well use it if you wish but I love Disktracker so much and it's fast, very usefull.
After trying every other search prog, this one is the best.
