File Buddy CommentaryNot the one-stop utility I was hoping for - Version: 9.0.2, 10/29/2009 12:28PM PST

MacHound
Rant...

I tried File Buddy in the hope it would let me fix a bunch of files' invalid permissions. No such luck. The permissions tags came up empty in FB's Info window with no way to change them. I downloaded BatChmod (freeware) and that did the job beautifully.

And Snow Leopard compatibility???

FileBuddy was ahead of the pack in the 1990's but it's been stagnant in recent years... probably for most of us not worth the price.

Sorry, SkyTag! I'll stick with free utilities that get the job done versus $40 commercial software with registration problems (see Pendragon's comment) that doesn't work as well as the free stuff.

File Buddy Troubleshooting ReportMust Continually Enter Serial Number - Version: 9.0.2, 9/26/2009 04:47AM PST

Nearly every time I launch FB, I get the advisory that I must enter my serial number. This occurs so often (about 90% of the time) that I now keep an alias of the File Buddy.fbAutoReg on my desktop.

I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the same problem and if there is a fix.

I just wrote the developer. Should I get a response, I'll post the relevant details.

With Mac OS 10.6, dragging a file onto File Buddy icon in the tool bar of a Finder window still does launch File Buddy, but does not open the Info panel anymore.

I submitted a request for an updated serial number a couple of weeks ago, with no response. Yesterday I received a reply, with a new serial number, from Larry at filebuddy@mac.com. He says that the built-in mechanism for requesting an updated serial number is not working due to changes in his web hosting company (he replied to a direct email). He had been hospitalized and apologized for the delay in responding. So, apparently this excellent program is not dead.

File Buddy CommentaryUnable to register - Version: 9.0.1, 4/19/2009 09:16PM PST

Unable to get an updated registration number (for new computer) for V9.
EMails returned as undeliverable.
I assume developer has gone, and an excellent program is now unsupported. I have used V7.5 for some years.

File Buddy CommentaryFile Buddy Find window - Version: 9.0.1, 4/6/2009 07:06AM PST

I have found File Buddy very helpful in various situations; it seems like the features are unlimited.

One thing that would be very helpful, (maybe I have not found this feature yet) would be that the various criterias in the Find window be repeatable like the Finder search window. The problem with the Finder search window is that it lacks the "not contain" option that File Buddy has.

File Buddy CommentaryAWOL - Version: 9.0.1, 3/22/2009 07:39AM PST

decadence
Too pricey (should be about $25) and now AWOL.

What was the premiere file handling utility has committed Hari-Kari.

What a pity.

Mac users still need a simpler find function and a tool for manipulating file metadata. Running about four different utilities to do this instead.

Thanks for the memories though.

File Buddy CommentaryStill the Best, but Dying on the Vine - Version: 9.0.1, 8/30/2008 09:37AM PST

Of all the applications in its category File Buddy is simply the best. However, it looks to be dying out as there has been no progress with it since April 2007. The current dated version has hang-ups that need to be fixed. At the developer's web site, it too is even dated. We are probably seeing the last of File Buddy. Maybe another developer will buyout the rights and bring it back to its glory?
