Product Description:

For working with files and folders such as:
  • View and edit a wide range of file and folder information.
  • Create droplet applications that automatically apply changes to items dropped on them, including the contents of folders.
  • Find files and folders using an extensive set of search criteria. Enhance file searches with plug-ins that extend file search capabilities. Conveniently perform a wide variety of actions on found items. Make File Buddy your default file finding application using the File Buddy CP control panel.
  • Modify the names of multiple files at once. For example, remove ".txt" from the names of a group of files.
  • Use contextual menus to accomplish many tasks in a single step. Contextual menus are supported on all versions of the Macintosh operating systems.
  • Create custom icons: from PICTs on the clipboard; from other icons; for folders using a variety of templates; with blank icons; using only small icons.
  • Create aliases.
  • Find empty files and folders, orphaned files, duplicate files, broken aliases, and unused preference files.
  • Automatically repair broken aliases
  • Rebuild the desktop file.
  • Move, delete, and copy files. Even copy invisible files and use the Replace Different option to skipping copying files that already exist.
  • Delete data and resource forks from files.
  • Erase files and unused disk space.
  • Create snapshots that can be used to track the changes on a disk, such as files installed by an installer. Use snapshots to uninstall applications.

What's new in this version:

  • The label menu was not available in the List window’s contextual menu for the Label column. Fixed.
  • Cursor would not change over list headings in the List window to denote when a heading can be dragged off or resized. Fixed.
  • When using any of the renaming windows to rename files only, File Buddy would not rename bundled documents because even though they appear to be files when viewed in the Finder, they are considered folders by the file system. While not a bug, this would occasionally confuse users who didn’t understand why File Buddy wouldn’t rename a document. File Buddy will now treat bundled documents as files when determining if an item should be renamed.
  • File Buddy would ask you confirm if you wanted to move items to the Trash even when the number of items to be moved was less than the minimum to invoke this warning. Fixed.
  • Removed the message reporting the number of icons created from images if all were created successfully.

Operating System Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

File Buddy CommentaryStill the Best, but Dying on the Vine - Version: 9.0.1, 8/30/2008 09:37AM PST

MAC_1984
Of all the applications in its category File Buddy is simply the best. However, it looks to be dying out as there has been no progress with it since April 2007. The current dated version has hang-ups that need to be fixed. At the developer's web site, it too is even dated. We are probably seeing the last of File Buddy. Maybe another developer will buyout the rights and bring it back to its glory?

I have to say, Lawrence Harris was very quick to respond when I emailed concerning some problems with FileBuddy on Leopard. He promised to attempt to address known problems soon, and was firm in his request for specific descriptions of problems with FB - not just vague complaints. That said, I would love to see an update out soon, but perhaps he's running a one-man show and is buried.

Single biggest improvement, in my opinion, would be extensive and contextual help files and tooltips (thus freeing Mr Harris from having to respond to untold enquiries).

I don't know of any - ANY - software that does in one package what File Buddy can do. It's just that figuring out exactly how to do it can be a bit elusive at times.

File Buddy ReviewDoes not reply to emails from registered users... - Version: 9.0.1, 2/10/2008 12:00AM PST

As a registered user of filebuddy who finds it an essential part of our workflow we are disappointed that the developer completely ignores emails from registered users who cannot use the software in Leopard 10.5 because of bugs.

We sent 5 emails and haven't even had an acknowledgement from SkyTag software. We also notice the last update to the software is now nearly a year ago. This doens't give me confidence that the developer is taking much interest in FileBuddy or its paying customers.

Complaints about customer service aside we should note the technical issues...

The software does everything with files you could conceivably want it to do. It is the best product for finding duplicates and performing manipulation of huge quantities of files. That being said it crashes a lot under Leopard. Specifically droplets, which are one of the main features of the program do not work under Leopard they crash whenever they are launched. If you look at the running processes on the machine you can see that FileBuddy is running as an Intel app on our Intel machine but the droplets are still PowerPC apps this may be contributing to the crashes in some way.

I cannot think of another piece of software we can replace FileBuddy with that will do what we need, so we will have to stick with it even though the developer clearly doesn't care about his customers any more.
