Snapz Pro X ReviewNOt What They Say - Version: 2.2.1, 10/19/2009 05:51PM PST

As Shareware you are suppose to be able to try if for a period of time and buy is you use. They say, "Please note that this is a trial version of Snapz Pro X. It will operate as a fully functional product for 15 days." This is not true. It has the words in big blue letters that it is a demonstration. I can't really tell the quality. Don't say "full functional" and have me install only to uninstall the software. Tell me the truth. Can't trust them.

Snapz Pro X ReviewStill needed, and so are audio improvements - Version: 2.2, 8/27/2009 03:03PM PST

Jason!
It is unfortunate but true. We still need this. For despite the many improvements in Snow Leopard, Apple foolishly refused to empower us with the means to select a "section" of the screen to take a video of. Who wants an enormous video of the entire screen on 24" iMacs or 30" big screens? The filesize becomes ridiculous (and yes, I am aware of the Animation codec which is very crisp yet compact for videos of the screen). SnapzPro solves this problem very nicely by giving me flexibility on what I can capture on screen.

But my gripe is voiceover compression. Why can't Snapz Pro give me the means to compress the microphone audio in a modern format like MP3 or AAC? Instead I have to compress using one of the silly choices SnapzPro gives me, which sounds quite bad and isn't that small in terms of filesize either. It's a major problem which is not being address.

Another concern is, why did it take Snow Leopard for this software to be updated? It hadn't been updated in ages and now the developer sighs and says, "Blasted! We have to update it." That's how I, a user, perceive it anyway. Improve your software, for goodness sake, and don't wait for OS updates to do it!

One has to wonder if we need Snapz Pro X anymore. It looks like 10.6, Snow Leopard has built in screen capture. See below: Record your screen. Catch the action taking place on your screen with screen recording. Start recording and QuickTime Player captures the activity on your screen and creates a movie file. It’s perfect for creating instructional media or when you need more than a simple screen shot. Link: http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/enhancements-refinements.html#quicktime"

Snapz Pro X ReviewVenerable Tool - Version: 2.1.5, 4/29/2009 01:53PM PST

Snapz has served me well over the years. I agree that it's getting long in the tooth especially since it does much of what Grab (which comes free with OS X) does, but has a better interface. I use it primarily grabbing movies. I primarily use Little Snaps or Voila for screen grabs since they have built in edit tools.

My biggest complaint is the inability to use newer apps to open the screen grabs in. It still offers Appleworks. It should allow me to use an app of my choice not theirs. I have started using Acorn for light work, other times I use Graphic Converter which the only other choice other than Preview that they offer that I have.

It needs an overhaul and feature targeted feature enhancements. One thing I would like to see is a menu bar icon to interact with the app. It is difficult to quit unless you have your secret decoder ring properly set.

Snapz Pro X ReviewVERY long in the tooth! - Version: 2.1.4, 4/10/2009 01:38AM PST

Sorry, but with the advent of amazing tools such as SCREEN FLOW for movie capture and even LAYERS or FREE tools such as JING for screen capture, I have no idea who could possibly still consider spending that kind of cash for THIS tool. It's comparatively SLOW and inflexible and doesn't use system level technology e.g. Core Video for amazing results like the first two aforementioned tools.

Snapz had it's days, but as far as I'm concerned, those days are LONG gone. At the very latest since Leopard.

If you need a truly great screen capture tools that are up to speed with TODAYS possibilities, then check out the tools above and spend a few bucks more and not regret it, unlike if you actually spent 79 bucks (ouch!!) on Snapz, which I in fact did a long long time ago, which I don't in fact regret, since like I said, it WAS a great tool in it's days.

The ONLY time I would say Snapz could be the way to go is if you actually STILL don't work with Leopard.

Snapz Pro X CommentaryBest tool for the job, but... - Version: 2.1.4, 4/9/2009 11:51PM PST

I've been using SnapzPro for years and it's superb in use in every way. Although I'm sure this release launches much faster than the previous one, it does appear to have one glitch for which I've just submitted a ticket to the support guys at Ambrosia and which reads:

"I just upgraded to version 2.1.4 If I check the 'Check for new versions at launch' option in Preferences then, on the subsequent launch I see a dialog that tells me that there's a new version available (2.1.4) with buttons that enable me to "Go to website" or "Cancel" and a list of "What's new". However, the about box tells me I'm running the new version 2.1.4! I also note that when I go back into preferences, the 'Check for new version at launch' box is now unchecked and so, of course, I don't see the dialog described above again unless I re-check it.

Tim.

Snapz Pro is an amazing tool for screen capturing.

The interface is looking great and well organized. The myriad of options give the user total freedom to capture the screen.

It is very easy to handle, as there are no complicated controls or confusing sets of options.

The only point that bother me is the price.

Snapz Pro X ReviewThis is good solid software - Version: 2.1.3, 12/19/2008 09:26PM PST

I have used Snapz Pro almost since it became available. I have always found it to be rock solid and to deliver what it promises. I also successfully use ScreenFlow for some jobs but I would not drop Snapz from my list of must have applications.

The tools built into OSX or many of the freeware alternatives are fine for what they do but my experience is that, if you want high quality video capture combined with quick and flexible screen capture, you need Snapz.

The one thing I want to dislike is the way a valid licence code often needs to be replaced if you are reloading the software. But, even with this, I have to say that I have never had a problem or been delayed because of the arrangement.

This is good software from a helpful and innovative developer that it worth supporting.

Snapz Pro X CommentaryNO cost to upgrade if.... - Version: 2.1.3, 12/19/2008 12:57PM PST

Might as well put this msge on its own before anyone sweats over upgrading costs. If you have version 2.x this new version is free. If you're still at version 1.x then yes, you'll have to shell out 20$ which, frankly, is a pittance for the usefulness of this app. From the ReadMe: Snapz Pro X 2 costs $69. Upgrades from Snapz Pro X 1.0 w/ movie capture are $20. This is a free update to registered users of Snapz Pro X 2.x. And for those that accuse Ambrosia of being evildoers, please remember that these folks remained with the Mac market through the lowest of times.
