Toast Titanium ReviewPrevious review--Poor Support - Version: 10.0.2, 5/16/2009 03:07PM PST

I thought I'd posted this before, but I can't find it under the Toast reviews anymore so I'm posting it again.

Toast 10 Titanium Pro comes with a folder of Pro Applications on the DVD. Included in that folder is a dmg file called "Sonicfire Pro Bonus Audio Tracks.dmg" which works with SonicFire Pro 5. The dmg file fails during the initial verification due to "codec overrun." Nothing I have done is able to mount the dmg, including copying to the hard drive, using other computers (3), and trying Disk Utility and Stuffit 13. I submitted the question to Roxio but in over a week I never got any resolution. Their only suggestions were to update Stuffit (I have the latest version) and try removing the codecs from Quicktime. Since I was getting no where, I called again and was on hold for 38 minutes and finally talked to Tech Support (PC expert, not a Mac expert). He said the only Mac expert they had said to remove the Quicktime codecs as that was the problem, but would not talk to me. For the life of me, I cannot see how a Quicktime Codec can interfere with trying to verify and mount a dmg file, but I did what they said. I copied the folder to another drive, deleted all the codecs, rebooted, and emptied trash. Then I tried the process all over again trying to mount the dmg file. It fails for the same reason.

I never received any update back from Roxio (turn-around is about 24-48 hours), but SmartSound (Sonicfire Pro) says they have received multiple complaints about this. So I suspect that the file is corrupt in some way, and Roxio seems very reluctant to update it or provide a download link for a valid version. Sonicfire gave me a valid link for the download. It took them less than 24 hours to solve the issue, and over 10 days for Roxio with NO SOLUTION.

The program is very good (minus Divx support) but do NOT expect any support from Roxio. DigitalRiver won't help either, although they will admit they've had lots of problems from users with Roxio with respect tot he purchase side.

Toast Titanium ReviewStreamer in Toast Unworthy of other programs - Version: 10.0.2, 5/3/2009 09:59AM PST

OK, so I really like Toast and think it has a lot to offer... but I do want to warn people about Streamer, an included app which allows you to view videos from "anywhere" even on your iPhone... not sure, but after an initial window of time when the program works as expected, it then experiences serious network issues that makes a connection to your Streamer application impossible. I purchased the new Toast mostly for Streamer (the old Toast worked great), and have been completely disappointed in its performance. It DOES work for a while - an hour or two? - then I am unable to connect back to the streamer server to view my videos. The only work around I have found has been to create a new "screen name" in Streamer, then I get my hour or so grace period before it goes offline again. Roxio's help pages did not provide any answer, and I am awaiting a response.

So take care if Streamer appeals to you in this package... Toast is great, but Streamer needs some serious work.

By the way, I have used other streaming programs (notably a music streaming program from Simplify Media) on the same computer and all has been well consistently... I really don't feel this is something on my side of the network, I believe it's something that is in the Streamer program / architecture / network.

Toast Titanium CommentaryI guess the lack of DivX explained. - Version: 10.0.2, 4/16/2009 05:23PM PST

DivX geniuses released their DivX 7 software as "Intel only". Now, if it was the reason that Roxio dropped DivX bundle, they were right doing it.
Imagine as a PPC user (which many, still exist) you pay that price to Toast 10 which is really a huge bundle and you figure out, the DivX 7 is not supported on your machine.
I guess the time that we all adopt, support, buy codecs like 3ivx, xvid and even Apple's bundled mpeg4 (not so great) codecs instead of paying money to DivX. In bundle or not.
Of course, they had options like bundling 3ivx instead or dropping the price. I am not apologising for them but in case of DivX, good to let it go.
