MacJournal ReviewCome a long way... - Version: 5.1b5, 8/20/2008 12:22PM PST

Good work Dan. You're certainly coming a ways with MacJournal. Couple of items that I would suggest that receive attention rather quickly:
1) Better WordPress support in the way of keeping a two way sync of blog entries so that you don't have to download them but rather always keep them sync'd in a folder
2) Show media such as embedded YouTube, Vimeo, whatever, videos and other media directly in the journal entries.

If you could get these in place and any other blog related WYSIWYG type of additions in place I believe you'll have a MarsEdit killer in addition to your regular other good feature set.

MacJournal ReviewBeta versions - Version: 5.1b5, 8/12/2008 03:35AM PST

these 15 day expiry times are a pain in the a... When I first got the Beta the one thing I didn't expect, was it to quit after 15 days. The last two have expired on me and the Beta numbers haven't even changed, it just means you have to keep going back to Mariner's web site and enter your details yet again to get yet another beta. And if you don't want to do that, there's no obvious way you can downgrade, except as one versiontracker guy has done, write directly to the developer. I work a 14 hour day as it is and I kind of resent having my time wasted. Why not just allow customers to downgrade easily by having a link on the site, or alternatively wipe the self-destruct code from the app! Well I've got three days to go before this one expires and I've already decided not to spend any more time on it - this time when it quits it can stay quit.

MacJournal ReviewMacJournal Rocks!!! - Version: 5.1b5, 7/18/2008 08:51AM PST

I have been using MacJournal for almost one year. I started on MacJournal 4 and have just upgraded to MacJournal 5. Primarily I use MacJournal to create blog posts offline prior to uploading them and also enjoy having on my computer a list of entries that I have created.

I like the feel and flow of MacJournal 5 and find it far easier to use than its predecessor. The WYSIWYG aspects are strong; in that, how I format my entry in MacJournal translate nicely to html. Also the inclusion of attachments works very well.

There are some features that I would like to see to make my experience complete however.

Blogging Tags:
I use WordPress for my blogging software and with this I get the capacity to use a 'More' tag. This tag will allow me to give a longer post a succinct overview and then a link should a viewer wish to see all of the post. With this my main page doesn't get too cluttered and I control the layout better. However MacJournal does not read this tag and so all I get in MacJournal is the first part of the post, but nothing else. I would like to see all of the post with a tag or graphic indicating the 'More' tag.

Podcasting:
I also podcast with my blog. I use Logic to create my podcasts and then upload the mp3 to my server (this is my preference). When I create my podcast post I just include the mp3 file as part of it. Thanks to a plug-in my podcast appears in a player in my blog post where I choose. However MacJournal does not retrieve this either. I have not explored at this point how I might podcast using MacJournal so I'm unsure of how I could change my process around this, but It would be nice if MacJournal treated this mp3 file the same way it treats the images I've included in my blog.

Summary:
Over all I'm very happy with MacJournal and look forward to future version. It is an application that I would be hard pressed to do with out now that I've used it. Thanks very much to the developers of this application. Please keep it up.

I downloaded and bought the 5.1b5 beta, though betas always expire, so I was confused. A few emails and very quick responses later, I have downloaded 5.0.4...which is fine for me. Just mostly wanted to comment here on how quick and helpful the MacJournal team was in getting me sorted out. Thanks!

MacJournal ReviewNew 5.1b5 version - Version: 5.1b5, 6/1/2008 06:04AM PST

The ability to have the entries show on the right, effectively making 3 horizontally adjacent panes, was exactly was I was looking for, so I eagerly downloaded the 5.1b5. There is a problem using that view, however: the right-hand-side entries pane doesn't resize properly - it stays too wide! Glad to see this option though, and hope the resizing bugs will be ironed out soon!

One brilliant app!

MacJournal ReviewBuggy - Version: 5.0.1, 2/2/2008 12:00AM PST

I have been using MacJournal for three years now, and I love it. I use it primarily as - well, a journal, an electronic diary, but also for keeping track of ideas, notes, plans, and goals. It's a wonderful program; more than that, it's become an essential part of my life. I'm sure I don't use its full power, either - I've never used "Discover wiki links", for example, or audio recording.

However, am I alone in discovering version 5.0 to be exceptionally buggy? It crashes all the time. Its behaviour is unpredictable. Some features (e.g. the numbering of lists) just don't work as they should. Support is now patchy; they answer some emails and comment on some bugs, but not all, and it used to be all, by return.

My advice, if you have version 4, wait for version 5 to settle down. I wish I hadn't spent money on this upgrade.

MacJournal ReviewMacJournal - Very flexible and multiple uses - Version: 5.0.1, 1/24/2008 12:00AM PST

I have been using the trial version of MacJournal 5 for about a week now and already it is my favorite Mac program. It is very flexible, allowing more than one journal.
I use it for actual journaling -- i.e. writing about how the day went, etc...

AND

I use it to log things, like when I sent a rebate in, a call to technical support, what I did during the day, doctor appointments, and anything else important.
MacJournal allowws entries to have keywords making them easy to categorize and find.

I volunteer for a few organizations, and MacJournal is going to be nice for taking notes of meetings and having a record of what was said during the board meeting.

For students, MacJournal could be used to take notes for a class.

Entries can also have audio and video stored in them. It's a neat feature that I would use, but unfortunately it isn't working for me. The developer is very active in trying to help me fix the problem.

All in all, MacJournal is an excellent and flexible program that I highly recommend.

MacJournal ReviewLost work, Typing that does not get saved - Version: 5.0.1, 1/23/2008 12:00AM PST

I downloaded this other day and upgraded my journals from the past. (i haven't tried using this program for a while but thought i would get back into it). Two days in a row i have had work literally disappear. After yesterdays experience i was saving constantly as i went. somehow that didn't matter today. When i was finished all the text i had been writing was gone. Even though every time i saved the red close button in the left corner of the window indicated that i could close the application and not have to save it since i had just done it. But even with that somehow it reverted back to a previous hour and all of my writing has been lost. Two days in a row the same thing. To day i was being careful with making sure i saved every ten minutes and still that was not good enough. I haven't been this frustrated with an application in a long time. Everything no a days has the ability to back up and find what you just lost but not this version of this application.

Totally pathetic.

MacJournal CommentaryScrolling with the Scroll Wheel - Version: 5.0.1, 1/19/2008 12:00AM PST

I have just upgraded to 5.0. Nice new features and everything. But as a user running Leopard OS X 10.5.1, I have noticed I no longer have the ability the scroll an entry with my wireless mouse's scroll wheel by clicking in the entry and scrolling. I was able to do this in v. 4.x. But this feature seems to be missing from 5.0.

As a side note, I cannot seem to easily find the blogging tools or settings for MacJournal.
