Product Description:

Traditionally, a utility called fortune, appears on most UNIX distributions. For unknown reasons, Apple has chosen not to include this program in OS X.
Cocoa Fortune is two things: 1) An OSX port of fortune, and 2) A Cocoa GUI wrapper for the command line application.
Cocoa Fortune is freeware, but donations are appreciated. People who have donated some money, and others as well, may email the developer to receive the full source code, both for the GUI wrapper and the CLI application.

What's new in this version:

  • The title bar can be removed
  • The shadow can be removed
  • The color of the text can be changed
  • Enabled copying the current fortune without selecting the text
  • Support for speech in Panther
  • Can (re)generate .dat index files for fortune files, several at a time
  • The fortune list management has been moved to a separate window
  • Drag and drop reordering
  • Add files by dragging them to the list
  • Instead of using the traditional fortune program, fortunes can be retreived from the Internet host with tens of thousands of quotes, described on this page: http://www.update.uu.se/cookie.html
  • Bug fixes and minor tweaks:
  • Leak that led to resource starvation (file handles) after some time
  • Positioning (over/under the menu bar, belove the Dock)
  • Minor redraw bug in preferences
  • Made it easier to select fonts
  • Window fits the text better, even for fortunes that lack a trailing newline
  • The window can be locked to the corner of a secondary screen
  • (fortune) Better randomization if called multiple times in a short time
  • (fortune) Now uses the latest fortune version from the FreeBSD tree
  • Added some command key shortcuts for various menu items
  • Code cleanups

Cocoa Fortune Usage TipIt works on 10.4.8 - Version: 1.4.0, 1/16/2007 09:20AM PST

This app works on 10.4.8, but I always have to delete the preferences before running it on a 1.8 GHz G5, then changing them after the program launched. I do this automatically at 4:30 PM with the following cron tab:

30 16 * * * rm /Users/uname/Library/Preferences/com.ittpoi.cocoafortune.plist

then launch the Cocoa Forune.app manually. For unknown reasons, this does not work properly when Cocoa Fortune is launched as a Startup Item or with a cron tab.

Cocoa Fortune ReviewEven Better - Version: 1.4.0, 5/12/2004 01:06AM PST

Mr Tea

I didn't think that Cocoa Fortune needed any improvement, but here's version 1.4, bristling with new options. Irresistable.
