laptopleonThe basics of DiskCatalogMaker havn't changed for years, but every now and then there is something extra added, like the iTunesque 'CoverFlow' feature, which really makes it nice to look at what already is a fast and stable tool.
I've used it for ages and it is still fast when you throw 250+ disks at it. It still opens in seconds, while it contains over 1.500.000 items.

4.2.2 crashes on search - Version: 4.2.2, 8/20/2007 05:45PM PST

pwoodsonThis is a shame, since 4.2.2 supposedly fixed the bug that wouldn't include search results if a disc's title was changed after scan. I have added a lot of info to discs' names in the catalog after scanning, to make them easier to reference.
I have reverted to 4.2.1, which doesn't crash, but sadly omits any changed titles from a search.
Nobody else had this problem?

Diks TooslNo matter ehat I do, I cannot make the list print in a way that will fit on a single sheet...and NO I don't mean lengthwise - it prints 2 pages per screen-full, ignores the paper size, ignores the font size, ignores everything I tell it & does exactly what it wants, which is apparently to waste hundreds of sheets of paper & who-knows-how-much toner, leaving me with a completely useless result.
I will never use this program again, nor will I use anything else by this author.

beta Version simply crashes on search... - Version: 4.2.2b2, 5/16/2007 08:08AM PST
pwoodson
The good news is that they claim to have fixed the very bug I mentioned in my last review.
The bad news is that the whole program crashes now... but since it's a Beta Version, I don't expect the bugs to be fully worked out yet. I wish them luck on a stable version! For now, I'll use 4.2.1...
Love this program, but one little problem...

pwoodsonThe "Find" feature will not find words that you have added to the Disc's name after scanning them. I.e. you add the word "Priority" to a Disc's Name in the catalog for better searching, only to find that a search for discs with "Priority" in the name will NOT turn up the ones you changed. What is the point of being able to modify the Titles if searching them won't turn up anything you modified?
Anyone find a workaround?...
Otherwise, great little program. Very useful.
Good choice

rubaiyatI also tested a wide variety of disk catalogers after I could no longer run my absolute OS9 favorite, DiskRecall, because there is no OSX version
DiskRecall was virtually instantaneous in its cataloging because I think it just stole all the information from the disk directory. Why this is not possible in OSX I do not understand, but then I am getting used to some reduced functionality in several areas of the "superior" OS. Needless to say what was barely a blip in the workflow in OS9 has become a slow and tedious process.
My previous choice for OSX cataloger was CDFinder because it appeared on paper to have all the features and widespread support. Unfortunately in practice it has had several severe problems.
1. It inexplicably errors on some catalogs, rendering them useless.
2. Because it runs a Spotlight search it gets quite confusing as to what is in the catolgs and what is on your mounted disks. The way they are presented doesn't clarify this.
3. In practice it was slow to scan the disks and I think required prompting to see the disk initially and spit the disks out after the scan. A lot of keyboarding for no real point.
Now that I have DiskCatlogMaker with my copy of Toast 8, I am going to switch, as it seems to do what I want in a clear friendly fashion and has the full backing of a large company so I anticipate it will be updated and be around for the long term. An important factor when you have thousands of CDs.
One important feature I should point out is that you can edit the CD/DVD's name in the catalog. This is important because sometimes they were burnt inadvertantely with a space before the name or some other error that throws it out of place in the sort order.
