Product Description:

Did you know that there's a quasi-hidden feature in Snow Leopard that will make your Macintosh run faster across the board at the expense of some backward compatibility? Or are you an Xserve or Mac OS X Server user that has to revert to the older kernel in order to use older software?

SixtyFourSwitcher is a preference pane that makes it easy for users to switch between booting using the 32-bit version of the Mac OS X kernel and the corresponding 64-bit version. Why would anyone want to do this? Because the 64-bit kernel is considerably faster than the 32-bit kernel, with the downside being that it is not compatible with older kernel extensions, and software that relies on the old extensions.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard") or later
  • Intel-based Mac
  • 64-bit CPU (Intel Xeon, Core 2 Duo, etc.)
  • Macintosh model that supports booting the 64-bit kernel (see read-me for details, but most 2008 and later model Macs support booting the kernel)
  • Original Apple boot loader (which you have, if you're using an Apple-brand computer and you know for a fact you haven't installed PC_EFI or other third-party boot loaders)

... are disingenuous and over-simplified. 64-bit does NOT result in your Mac being "faster across the board". To say so is misleading. Or demonstrates a lack of understanding.

[ I know, you people who insist you need (ie: want) K64 will flame me for pointing out facts. Flame on. But it doesn't make you right, or me wrong. ]

Does exactly what it says it does. Whilst there are other apps to do this (and it's easy enough to change the option manually), it seems logical that this should be a prefpane choice.
